Doctoral research fellow position, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo, Norway

Scholarship / Financial aid: unknown
Date: a period of four years
Deadline: September 1, 2007
Open to: Master degrees within biology domain

Announcement follows:

The position is available for a period of four years with 25% compulsory work.

Project start date: as soon as possible

The position is associated to a prioritized research program in structural biology aiming at solving protein structures using NMR and/or X-ray crystallography. The project is financed by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The successful candidate will be required to use a maximum of 25% of his/her time.

The main goal of this PhD project is to solve the structures of proteins with Methyl-CpG-binding domains (MBD). Methylation of DNA is associated with heterochromatin and with gene silencing. MBD proteins are in general thought to be involved in epigenetic control of gene expression. True MBD proteins bind methylated DNA, but others seem also to bind non-methylated DNA, or not to bind DNA at all. In this project, we want to compare the structures of MBDs with different binding properties identified in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (see Berg et al., 2003, Nucleic Acids Res. 31:5291-304). The PhD-student will be associated with Professor Reidunn B. Aalen’s research group and to The University of Oslo Biomolecular Structure Platform where Ass. Professor Bill Davies is head of the Protein Production Laboratory.

The position requires a Master degree or similar within molecular biology, cell biology, biotechnology, biochemistry or structural chemistry. The applicant must be qualified for the doctoral program within these disciplines. Experience with expression of recombinant proteins, protein purification, and methods relevant for structure determination of proteins, is an advantage, but not a requirement.

The letter of application should include a curriculum vitae with a list of published and unpublished works with a statement summarizing the applicant’s scientific work and interests, certified copies of certificates, and copies of co-authored publications.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Firstly, the applicants must have obtained undergraduate (Cand.mag., i.e. B.Sc. level) and postgraduate (cand.scient. or Siv.ing., i.e. M.Sc. level) qualifications. This represents approximately five years of full time studies after completion of European Upper Secondary School/International Baccalaureate. For more information see: http://www.matnat.uio.no/

Appointment to a research fellowship is conditional upon admission to the Faculty's research training programme. An approved plan for the research training must be
submitted no later than one month after taking up the position, and the admission approved within three months.

The University of Oslo (UiO) wishes to achieve a more equal distribution of scientific employees between the sexes. Female applicants are encouraged to apply.

Closing date for applications: September 1, 2007
