A creative, highly motivated post-graduate is sought for an available Ph.D. scholarship to research neuronal K+ channel drugs . This position is funded by the Marine Institute and administered through the Enterprise Partnership Scheme of the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET); www.ircset.ie/ grant schemes/postgrade. html (open the link for Marine Institute Enterprise Partnership scheme). Although the 10th August deadline has passed, a suitable student can be selected *before 28th August *(at the very latest).
In the International Centre for Neurotherapeutics, a substantial part of the research undertaken by my multi-disciplinary group involves using K+ channel heteromeric proteins as novel targets for drugs, to raise the excitability of under-active neurons in various disease states. This work entails concatenation of the individual genes encoding each subunit in the tetrameric channels, followed by expression on the surface of cultured cells. These are being employed to screen available banks of drugs for abilities to inhibit the different oligomeric subtypes of K+ channels that mimic those found in human brain. A new part of this programme is concerned with identifying unique forms in immune and/or endothelial cells so that
blockers can be found for such tissue-specific K+ channel variants which have potential for attenuating inflammatory and vascular disorders.
The scholarship is generously supported (€ 24,003 pa) for 3 years including payment of fees.
Applicants should hold a M.Sc. or B.Sc. (1st or upper 2nd class honours) in Biomedical or Biological Sciences. The successful candidate should have a strong ability to work in an interdisciplinary team-oriented environment. Furthermore, good communication skills and a working knowledge of English would be desirable.
