Project Overview
The EastWest Institute (EWI) is a European-American `think and do tank', which for 25 years has operated long-term projects that aim to reduce tensions and promote dialogue and mutual understanding in critical locations around the world. EWI's cross-border co-operation project in Kosovo, southern Serbia and northern Macedonia (the `GPKT project') works towards the core goals of conflict prevention and
community development in the four border municipalities that comprise the `GPKT' micro-region € ¦’¶ Gjilan/Gnjilane (Kosovo), Presevo (Serbia), Kumanovo (Macedonia) and Trgoviste (Serbia). In addition to work with municipalities and central-level governments, the project targets civil society through several cross-border and multi-ethnic Working Groups € ¦’¶ the GPKT Education Committee, the GPKT Women's Working Group, the GPKT Media Working Group and the GPKT Youth Council. The GPKT
Youth Council is a cross-border multi-ethnic youth group drawn from the four GPKT municipalities, established in December 2004, which recently achieved status as independent NGOs in both Kosovo and Macedonia. The Council works for positive change in the GPKT communities, for youth empowerment, inter-ethnic relationship building, capacity building for action, and acts as a GPKT Youth Embassy.
Project Activities
A two-day training workshop on negotiation and mediation skills. This training will be held during the autumn of 2007. The objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the skills of youth from the region in the areas of negotiation and mediation. Capacity building for skills' development in areas related to conflict prevention and peacebuilding have been a key activity of the GPKT Youth Council Working Group, and coincide well with the YC4CBC's goal of promoting good inter-ethnic relations, peace, and tolerance.
November 2007 Youth Bridges Issue. This issue will focus on the history and institutions of the European Union. Being published at a time when the Kosovo status decision has been a cause for much speculation and trepidation, this issue will approach the European integration process from a peacebuilding perspective. A presentation of the EC Youth in Action Programme will also be included in the publication, providing the opportunity to youth from the target region to feel part of the `European project'.
January 2008 Youth Bridges Issue. This issue of the magazine will focus on educational opportunities in Germany and will present the Goethe Institut and the DAAD. This issue will provide information that is difficult to access in the border municipalities and will also present interviews with students from this region studying in Germany and exchange students from Germany studying in this region.
