International Symposium
THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE ON EUROPEAN STAGES

We encourage you to submit your abstracts and participate at the symposia „The Ottoman Empire on European Stages“ in order to share your achievements in the fields of theater- cultural- and performance studies.

Don Juan Archive Vienna in Cooperation with the UNESCO International Theatre Institute in Vienna and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Istanbul

Dates and Venues:
Vienna, Austria: 25 - 26 April 2008 at the International Theatre Institute, Türkenstrasse 19, 1090 Vienna Istanbul, Turkey: 5 - 6 June 2008 at the Austrian Cultural Forum, Yeniköy, Istanbul

Theme:
The Ottoman Empire in the mirror of European stages - with special focus on the 18th Century (including the lives, works, or performances of W. A. Mozart and Sultan Selim III).

Papers may possibly deal with:
- The eighteenth century, particularly the period 1756-1808 (including the lives, works, or performances of W. A. Mozart and Sultan Selim III);
- The “Turkish / Ottoman” or “Turkish Subject” in the eighteenth-century theatre;
- Operas with Turkish themes by Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, Kraus, Süßmayr, von Winter, among others;
- Performing “Turkish Sultans” on European stages;
- Turkish subjects or topics in the popular theatre;
- Costume history, dress-balls;
- The earliest theatrical performances in the Ottoman Empire, particularly with respect to opera in Istanbul and/or in the palace of Selim III.

Paper Proposals:
Persons who wish to present a paper at the „The Ottoman Empire on European Stages“ symposia are invited to submit proposals containing:
1) A one-page abstract of the proposed paper naming the presenter(s) ,
2) Contact information: Name, Title, Position, University or Institutional affiliation, postal address, telephone, fax, and email, and
3) A 75-100-word mini-resume or bio of the presenter(s) .

The official language of the symposia is English. Each presentation will last a total of 30 minutes (20 minute presentation + 10 minute discussion) Papers presented will be published in fall 2008.

Speakers include: Emre Araci, Thomas Betzwieser, Ulf Birbaumer, Aysin Candan, Matthew Head, Bent Holm, Yekta Kara.
