PhD: “Nanomaterials for Application in Sensors, Catalysis and Emerging Technologies” (NASCENT)

1 Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position (up to two years) is available at the Faculty of Chemistry at Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), Spain, in the framework of the Marie Curie Research Training Network (RTN) “Nanomaterials for Application in Sensors, Catalysis and Emerging Technologies” (NASCENT) funded by the European Union.

The network focusses on the development and manufacture of molecularly imprinted micro- and nanostructured polymers for selective applications in catalysis, chemical analysis and sensors. The Network comprises multidisciplinary academic participants involved in MIP research from different European countries and three industrial partners (http://www.nascent.qmul.ac.uk/).

Job description
The role of student at UCM will be the synthesis and characterization of luminescent probes and molecularly imprinted polymers for their application as building blocks for optical sensors and immuno-type assays.

We aim at providing first-class training to our ERS fellow, serving as a source of experts for academic research, industry and emphasizing international connections and mobility. Program seminar series, summer schools, international conferences annually, as well as periodic laboratory meetings and day-to-day personal supervising. The candidate has the possibility of obtaining a degree of Master of Organic Chemistry (tuition free) upon completion of the academic requirements (www.masterenquimicaorganica.info).

Applicants should hold a bachelor, or equivalent, degree in Chemistry and experience in organic or analytical chemistry.

Some background in macromolecular chemistry, in optical techniques for chemical analysis and/or immunochemistry will be a bonus. Applicants must have good skills in English and knowledge of Spanish will be valuable.

Funding Notes
Applicants must be nationals of an EU member, associate or candidate state, except Spain; for information on the eligibility criteria, check Chapter 5 of the Marie Curie RTN Handbook, http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp6/mariecurie-actions/action/training_en.html.

Candidates should send their CV, motivations to apply, research interests, certificate of basic degree, certificate of English skills and two letters of reference to:
