PhD-researcher in Marine Geochemistry

The Faculty of Geosciences offers education and research concerning the geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and anthroposphere. With a population of 2200 students (BSc and MSc) and 575 staff, the faculty is a strong and challenging organisation. The Faculty is organised in four Departments: Innovation and Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Physical geography, and Human Geography and Urban and Regional Planning.

The Utrecht Department of Earth Sciences conducts teaching and research across the full range of the solid and environmental Earth sciences, with activities in almost all areas of Biogeology, Geochemistry, Geology, Geophysics and Hydrogeology. Research is integrated into five interdisciplinary programmes addressing the structure and dynamics of the planetary interior, the evolution of the lithosphere, the properties of Earth materials, as well as actuo- and paleo-environments and climates.

PhD-researcher in Marine Geochemistry (1,0 fte)

Job description

Geochemical characterization of microbial processes in Extreme Environments (high pressure, high salinity) of the Mediterranean:
This project is part of the European project MIDDLE aiming in characterizing microbial life in extreme deep ocean/brine environments. Characterization and interpretation of geochemical gradients such as in elements and isotopes (e.g. Mn,N,S,C), and elemental speciation are amongst the tools to be used to detect and to unravel microbial processes in particular at redox transitions/interfaces in deep marine brine basins. Funding is provided by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO: EU-DEEP grant to G.J. De Lange).

Qualifications

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a MSc degree in (marine, bio) Geochemistry or a related field.

Terms of employment

Full-time PhD positions for 4 years, with monthly salary starting at € 1,956.- in the first year to € 2,502.- in the last year of appointment.
