Workshop Protein Biotechnology-School of Pharmacy-ITB

WORKSHOP ON PROTEIN BIOTECHNOLOGY SCHOOL OF PHARMACY, ITB, MAY 12 – 16, 2008

Introduction
It is a great pleasure for us to invite lectures, researchers, undergraduate – master – doctoral students who are interested in protein andprotein engineering to attend a 5 day workshop on Protein Biotechnology held bythe School of Pharmacy, ITB on May 12 – 16, 2008.

This workshop will includelectures and practical works in protein biotechnology. In this opportunity, weare honored to have a distinguished lecture and researcher from the Departmentof Pharmaceutical Biology, University of Groningen The Netherlands, Prof. Dr.Wim J. Quax, who will share his expertise in a new techniques to studyprotein- protein interaction namely Surface Plasmon Resonance and in proteinengineering to create new protein with pharmaceutical interests.

Other experts fromIndonesia will also share experience in protein overproduction and proteinengineering, protein characterization- isolation- purification, proteincrystalizati on, state of the art of cytokine-based therapy, state
of the art ofgrowth factor-based therapy and state ofthe art of transgenic plant for protein production.

For practical work, we willinclude hands on experience on protein overproduction and affinity purification, protein analysis by SDS-PAGE and protein crystalization. A virulence factorfrom a human pathogen, Streptococcus
pyogenes namely fibronectin- binding protein will be used as a model for thepractical work.

At the end of the workshop, participants are expected tounderstand some principles behind protein biotechnology including recombinantprotein production, purification, characterization and crystalization. I amlooking forward to seeing you on May 12, 2008.

Workshop Date and Venue
Workshop will be held on May 12 – 16, 2008 at
School of Pharmacy, ITB
Workshop schedule
Workshop will commence on May 12, 2008 at 13:00.

Lectures will include Basic Principles and Application of Surface
Plasmon Resonance and Protein Engineering to create new protein with pharmaceutical
interests by Prof. Dr. Wim J. Quax, Protein Overproduction and Protein
Engineering (Ernawati Giri Rachman, Dr), Introduction to workshop and protein
engineering for therapeutic engineering (Debbie S. Retnoningrum, Dr), Protein
Characterization- Isolation- Purification (Toto Subroto, Dr), Protein
Crystalization (Zeily Nurachman, Dr), State of the Art of Cytokine-based
Therapy (Heni Rachmawati, Dr), State of the Art of Growth Factor-based Therapy
(Tri Suciati, Dr) and State of the Art of Transgenic Plant for Protein
Production (Elfahmi, Dr). Practical work will include protein overproduction,
protein isolation, protein characterization by SDS-PAGE, protein affinity
purification and protein crystalization. This current workshop will focus on
practical work and lectures are mostly to support the practical works. Some
lectures are however, to give more overview on the use of recombinant proteins
especially in therapeutic applications.
