*The organisation*

The iBMG is affiliated with Erasmus MC and the Erasmus University Rotterdam and is responsible for several education programs on policy and management positions in healthcare, which serve 750 students. In addition, research is being done on three major research themes: ‘market organising and system setup’, ‘quality and effectiveness in healthcare’ and ‘healthcare organisation management’. iBMG has about 175 employees. The three positions offered are within the department of Healthcare Governance.

*The Department of Healthcare Governance*

The department of Healthcare Governance studies the development and consequences of changing steering arrangements in the healthcare sectors. The department consists of some 25 researchers with different social science backgrounds such as public administration, science and technology studies, organizational sociology and anthropology. This combination of disciplines places us in a unique position to study both changing 'modes of governance' and the relation they have with changing
positions of key actors in the field of healthcare (e.g. professionals, patients, managers) as well as the material infrastructures (e.g. information technologies, performance assessment tools) that are built to form the changing steering relationships. Research of the department is largely funded by (inter)national science funding bodies and organizations in the field of healthcare. Further information can be found at:

*Description of the position*

The Ph.D. candidates will participate in one or more of several research projects of the department of Healthcare Governance, concerning the position of managers in increasingly complex and hybrid healthcare settings, innovations in health and social care and patient safety. They will also play a role in the educational programs in which the department participates, mainly at the bachelor level.

*Requirements*

The successful applicant for this position is expected to have a master degree in a relevant field like Health Policy and Management, Science and Technology Studies, Public Administration, or Organisation Studies. Further s/he should have good writing skills, and a strong motivation for doing scholarly research in the field of healthcare governance. Candidates with strong skills and experience with doing empirical research, qualitative research methods like ethnography, interviewing and discourse analysis are preferred. Candidates should have excellent skills in English and Dutch.

*Appointment and salary*

Come 2010, iBMG will become a part of the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). New employees will be employed by the EUR from now on. This means that your contract will be subject to the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). A Ph.D. candidate will initially receive a temporary contract for 1.5 years in order to assess his or her compatibility. When you prove to be an asset, you will receive a second temporary contract for 2.5 years. Remuneration will be in accordance with the Ph.D. scale set by the CAO NU. Fulltime work (38 hours per week) will pay € 2.042.- before taxes in the first year, going up to € 2.612.- in the fourth and final year. In addition, there’s a set end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and generous opportunities for taking time off.
