PhD: Potato associated AM fungal (meta-) diversity / metagenomics

PhD student position (BAT2a/2) - to be filled mid-end 2010

Topic: AM fungal (meta-) diversity / metagenomics associated with Andean potato cultivars. Background: Potato is one of the most important food-crops wordwide, and in this EU project (http://valoram.ucc.ie/) different groups try to characterise and use potato-associated microorganisms for better, sustainable agricultural practices.

Experience needed: basic molecular biology methods and background in phylogenetics / molecular biodiversity assessments. Methods: range from basic molecular biological methods to 454FLX-Titanium deep pyrosequencing and (probably) metagenomics. Traveling: The option of making a trip to the Andes (Peru/Bolivia/ Ecuador) exists, but this is not mandatory, as our partners perform the samplings in South America.
