2 PhD Position in Agricultural Economics at Univ. of Hohenheim

The International Research Training Group "Modeling Material Flows and Production Systems for Sustainable Resource Use in Intensified Crop Production in the North China Plain" of the University of Hohenheim, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinsch aft, is seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates for

starting June 1st, 2010 for 3 years. The PhD grant amounts to 1,103 € net per month (+ allowances for stays in Beijing).

The interdisciplinary research and education program is jointly conducted with China Agricultural University, Beijing. It comprises subprojects in Plant Nutrition, Plant Ecology, Biogeophysics, Agricultural Engineering, Crop Science, Plant Breeding, Weed Science, Farm Management, Computer Applications in Agriculture, and Rural Development Theory and Policy. Analysis and sustainable improvement of cropping systems in the North China Plain are the main objectives of the research. The accompanying qualification program focuses on modeling of agricultural systems.

Successful applicants will work on one of the following research topics:
- Economic evaluation of farm level development strategies(supervis ion: Prof. Dr. Enno Bahrs)
- Agrarian change and rural development policy (supervision: Prof. Dr. Manfred Zeller)

Applicants must have an above-average Master's degree or equivalent in Agricultural Economics or related fields. Strong computer skills, and excellent command of the English and German language would be a plus. The willingness, both to do interdisciplinary research in China (including research stays of up to several months) and to actively participate in the IRTG activities, is a prerequisite for the application. Candidates are expected to take up their residence in Stuttgart or the vicinity.
