CfA: Academic Programme of the Summer School - Bogomils: A dissident bridge of Europe cultural continuity

St. Clement’s Summer University Summer School
Ohrid, 16-29 August, 2010

Course Director: Prof. Maja Angelovska-Panova PhD

The Summer School “Bogomils: A Dissident bridge of European cultural continuity” will explore the history of Europe that is less known yet highly significant, that of the Bogoumil movement and its intellectual legacy. It is a history of spirituality demonstrating centuries-long cultural and intellectual exchange between the Byzantium, Balkans and the West of Europe, establishing civilizational continuity of a Europe undivided between the East and the West. The main aim of the summer school is to present the phenomena of Bogomilism, which in circumstances of rigorous religious confrontations, represented a factor of interaction and unification between different cultures and civilizations in Europe .

SECOND WEEK 23-27 AUGUST

Course title: The Evolution of the Balkan-Byzantine Apocalyptic Tradition and its Role in the Emergence of Heterodox and Heretical Currents and Changing Politico-Eschatological Models in Medieval Balkan Christianity
Resource person: Dr Yuri Stoyanov, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London , UK

Description of the Course: The general purpose of the course is to explore and demonstrate the manifold role of the Balkan-Byzantine apocalyptic tradition in medieval Balkan Christianity, with a particular focus on its role in the rise and evolution of heterodox, mystical and heretical trends (such as Bogomilism and Paulicianism) in the region throughout the medieval period. Another focus of the course will be the impact of Balkan-Byzantine apocalypticism on the political theologies and changing politico-eschatological models in the various versions of Balkan Christianity, which could serve on occasions as religio-political bridge-building between these versions. The course will explore the specific nature of Byzantine apocalypticism and its main forms, the historical-eschatological and the visionary (or ascent) apocalypses as well as their re-interpretation and transformations in the South Slavonic Orthodox world. The significant impact of Balkan-Byzantine apocalypticism on the religious and political life in the medieval Balkans will be charted in the framework of the main subject of the Summer School and will focus on its role in the creation of theological diversity and syncretistic (often popular Christian) theologies, heterodox and heretical forms of Christianity as well as the emergence of new apocalyptic traditions trying to conceptualize the present and forecast the future (sometimes in the context of a search for a religious and political unity in Balkan Christianity). The course will also address the implications of the diffusion of Byzantine and Balkan-Byzantine apocalypticism in Western Europe for the rise of Western popular heresy and dissent.
