PhD Consumer perception and Evaluation of Product Designs - T

PhD Consumer Perception and Evaluation of Product Designs Delft
University of Technology
Department of Product Innovation Management
Delft, 2628 CE (Zuid-Holland) ,
38 hours per week

Job description

Methods providing the opportunity to assess consumer reactions to product designs validly can give a company a competitive edge. The goal of this project is to develop a set of design perception dimensions used by consumers to describe and evaluate designs for durable consumer products. With these dimensions a valid and useful assessment can be made of perceptions. This helps companies in attuning the design of their products to their market proposition and the tastes and wants of the target consumers.

In the first stage of the project, the set of design perception dimensions will be gathered and tested on its reliability and validity. The second stage will be determined by the candidate and other interested parties. One option is to develop a computer tool in which the design perception dimensions are illustrated with pictures from different product categories.

This tool makes the meaning of the dimensions more clear, and – as designers are visual thinkers – will increase the use of consumer input about design preference in the design process. However the second stage can also be an investigation of the relation of these dimensions with segmentable variables such as demographics and lifestyle, an investigation into differences between countries in the perception or preference of the dimensions, or a study into whether preferred perception on the dimensions differs between certain groups of products. The Association of Dutch Designers (BNO) and market research agency Ruigrok are involved in the project.

This research project falls under the Consumer Preference (PFE-3) research sub-programme within the Product Functionality and Experience programme (see www.io.tudelft. nl, research programme).
