PhD position in information access and text mining Amsterdam, (The Netherlands) ,
38 hours per week
The Universiteit van Amsterdam
Job description
The Information and Language Processing Systems (ILPS) group, which is part of the Intelligent Systems Laboratory Amsterdam (ISLA), is actively expanding its research into user-generated content (such as weblogs, wikis and other highly dynamic subjective content) and is looking for a versatile, highly motivated PhD candidate who is interested in information access and text mining.
Tasks
Recent years have witnessed an explosive growth in online user-generated content such as weblogs, wikis and discussion fora. Individuals from around the world can share opinions, experiences and expertise at the push of a button. This development raises significant research challenges for information retrieval and applied language technology. Search, exploration, sentiment and opinion analysis, trend detection and tracking, as well as cross-media and cross-channel mining are just a
few examples of tasks for which innovative solutions need to be developed. The successful candidate will build on ILPS's ongoing research in blog retrieval and text mining for blogs and Wikipedia (as demonstrated at e.g. moodviews.com and verkiezingskijker. nl), and help define and execute an exciting new research agenda.
Requirements
University Graduate
• Research-oriented Master's degree (MSc/MA or equivalent)
• Strong background or demonstrable interest in information retrieval, applied natural language technology and/or machine learning
• Solid programming skills.
Industrial experience with or a track record in project-based work will be a definite advantage.
