PhD Studentship, Molecular Astrophysics: Exploring the Universe through Astronomical Observations and Modelling

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Astronomy and Astrophysical Chemistry Group at The University of Nottingham available from September 2007. The project is to undertake observational, spectral modelling and theoretical /computational research on molecules and dust in the interstellar medium, nebulae, circumstellar shells and cool stars, including the fascinating object the 'Red Rectangle'.

The single largest project is on the `diffuse interstellar absorption bands' which is recognised as a fundamental astrophysical problem and is now attracting a very high level of world-wide attention from astronomers, physicists and chemists. The group also conducts complementary research on a wide variety of related topics including the 'Unidentified' IR (UIR) Emission Bands and their role in galaxy studies, carbon and oxygen-rich refractory molecules in cool stars and stellar envelopes, small-scale-structure of the interstellar medium and extragalactic dust.

This interdisciplinary research will be carried out using observations made with a range of telescopes operating in the ultraviolet, visible and infrared spectral regions in e.g. Australia (AAT), Hawaii (UKIRT/GEMINI-N), Chile (VLT/GEMINI-S) and with the SPITZER satellite. Data will also be obtained from the new 10m-class Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in which the University of Nottingham is a shareholder.

Further information is available at: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/~pczastrc/index.html.

Due to funding restrictions by the PPARC, this studentship is only available to UK/EU (in part) students only, but other funding opportunities exist for EU and international students. Interest is welcome from students with backgrounds in physics, chemistry, astronomy and in combinations of these areas.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor P Sarre, tel: 0115 951 3460, fax: 0115 951 3562 or Email: Peter.Sarre@Nottingham.ac.uk.

This studentship is open until filled.
