PhD Studentship in Chemical Nanoscience

A PhD studentship is available in the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. This highly interdisciplinary post in synthesis and characterisation of functional molecular nanostructures is integrated in a new UK Basic Technology project entitled “Surface supramolecular assembly: molecular entrapment and nanostructure fabrication”. The project will involve synthesis and processing of organic molecules possessing functional and exploitable optoelectronic properties. The main goal of this project is to develop methods for the controlled assembly of electron-spin or optically active molecules on technologically relevant surfaces, and, in collaboration with our project partners, to explore functional properties of these architectures. Realisation of such nanostructured molecular materials can have useful applications in various electronic nanodevices including chemical sensors, information storage and information processing devices, and can provide a bridge between the molecular and the macroscopic worlds.

Supervision will be provided by a holder of the European Young Investigator (EURYI) Award, Dr Andrei Khlobystov, and Professor of Chemical Nanoscience, Neil Champness, and the project will be undertaken in close collaboration with the Quantum Information Processing Interdisciplinary Research Centre (see: http://www.qipirc.org) and the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nottingham.

Students should have, or expect to obtain, a BSc (first or upper second class) or a Masters degree in chemistry or a relevant discipline and have good written and communication skills.

Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is only open to UK/EU students (guidelines on eligibility for EPSRC studentships are available at: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/), and covers a tax-free stipend (minimum £12,600 per annum) as well as all tuition fees (at the UK/EU rate).

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr A Khlobystov, Email: Andrei.Khlobystov@Nottingham.ac.uk. Information about the research laboratory is available at: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nanocarbon/.

Applications, with a detailed CV and the names and addresses of two referees, should be sent to Dr A Khlobystov, School of Chemistry, The University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham, NG7 2RD.
