2008 Sakip Sabanci International Research Award Topic Announced
The Brookings Institution and Sabanci University are pleased to announce the topic for the 2008 Sakip Sabanci International Research Award. The topic for this year's award is "The Ottoman Legacy for Contemporary Turkish Culture, Institutions, and Values." The deadline for submissions for the 2008 award is January 31, 2008. Applicants are urged to submit essays scrutinizing reflections of the Ottoman legacy on contemporary Turkish culture, institutions, and/or values. Essays from a variety of disciplines, including - but not necessarily limited to - international relations, political science, law, sociology, history, public administration, and literature, are encouraged. The selection committee will give priority to those submissions which have the potential for publication by a leading publishing house.The Sakip Sabanci International Research Award includes $20,000 for the first prize, $10,000 for the second, and $5,000 for the third. An independent, international jury will select the prize winners. The Award is jointly administered by the Brookings Institution and the Trustees of Sabanci University, Istanbul.
Conditions for the competition are:
- All entries must be new and original works, not published previously in any form. - Essays must be approximately 8000 words, including title, citations, and footnotes. - Entries must be submitted in English by means of e-mail, in the form of an attached Word or PDF document to the following two addresses simultaneously:

- Essays must also be mailed to the following address: Istanbul Policy Center, Sabanci University Campus, Orhanli - Tuzla, 81474 Istanbul, Turkey. - Each submission must include the following information: Entrant's name, institution, mailing and e-mail address and phone number. - The deadline for submissions for the 2008 award is strictly January 31, 2008.
About the Sakip Sabanci International Research AwardThe Sakip Sabanci International Research Award is named in honor of the late Mr. Sakip Sabanci, a prominent Turkish philanthropist and business leader. The corporation that he headed, Sabanci Holding, is one of the world's largest family owned businesses. Mr. Sabanci is also the founder of Istanbul's Sabanci University, one of Turkey's leading academic institutions. The award is designed to promote fresh thinking, new ideas, and original research relevant to Turkish studies conducted in any field of the humanities and social sciences. It is jointly administered by the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Trustees of Sabanci University. The prize winners are selected by an independent, international jury. The first place winner of the 2007 Sakip Sabanci Award was Dr. Christine Philliou of Columbia University for her essay titled "The Paradox of Perceptions: Interpreting the Ottoman Past Through the National Present."
