Mapping Eastern Europe
Interdisciplinary conference on the world and times of maps in Berne, Switzerland, September 25 27, 2008
The second conference of the Forum Ostmittel- und Südosteuropa (FOSE) is aimed especially at new scholars and at experts on Eastern European history, but also at scholars from all disciplines that deal with Eastern Europe and its cartographic representation through the ages. Contributions are requested that deal with the theoretical exploration of maps for historical scholarship, and with the analysis of map illustrations, authors, projections, geostrategy, and with the perception of self and other. The intent is for scholars from different disciplines to illuminate the charted domain of Eastern Europe (Central Eastern Europe, South Eastern Europe, and Russia). Proposals from Eastern Europe are especially requested, for example those which explore the cultural perception of space as evidenced by maps.
Possible subject areas include:
- The development of scientific cartography / historical cartography
- The changing use of maps: from luxury to commodity item
- Illustration of maps
- Maps as records of change
- Cryptic and deceptive maps
- Map theory: methodological issues with map reading
- Maps and the search for authors
- Neutrality and authenticity: map projections and representations
- Spatial understanding and spatial concepts
- Europe and Eastern Europe: mapping (Eastern) Europe, inventing (Eastern) Europe
Conference proposals of no more than one page, accompanied by a short CV with a list of publications, are accepted until September 30, 2007. Papers can be presented in German, English or French. A publication of the conference proceedings is planned.
