PhD in the field of color reproduction of images, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Empa is a materials science and technology research institution in Switzerland. It belongs to the ETH domain and as such is an important element in education, science and innovation in Switzerland. At our Media Technology Laboratory we are offering a position for a PhD student in the field of color reproduction of images.

The focus of the laboratory for Media Technology is applied research, serving the printing and image processing industry. One of our topics is gamut mapping, i.e. the rendering of colour images for displays and printing media with restricted colour reproduction properties. For our solutions we make use of know-how in different disciplines in computer science, colour science and media technology.

The PhD work will be part of a project with the goal to formulate gamut mapping as a geometric optimization problem and solve it on an individual image basis. The project will be interdisciplinary in the fields of colour science, psycho-physics, computational geometry and optimization. Besides relevant contributions to the scientific communities, it is planned to follow an engineering approach. As a
product we aim for a proof of concept software allowing a verification of the quality in real world image processing work-flows such as newspaper printing and digital photography. The main emphasis is on maximizing image quality rather than computing speed. The project is partially funded by the Hasler Foundation for a period of three years.

The work will be performed at the Media Laboratory of Empa Dübendorf (a Research Institute of the ETH domain located near Zürich, Switzerland) in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zürich.

We are looking for a computer scientist with interest in imaging science, colour science, computational geometry or optimization. We do not require knowledge of the German language. If you are a computer scientist with a background in one of the aforementioned topics and if you feel attracted to work in a small team within the
interdisciplinary scientific environment of a research centre.
