Applications are invited for a PhD studentship sponsored by Schlumberger Cambridge Research, to study the self-excited vibration of long drill strings and possible control measures to suppress these vibrations and improve drilling performance. The project will focus on the development and analysis of small-scale laboratory rigs to
simulate some aspects of the full-scale problem under controlled conditions allowing more complete observation of the dynamic response. The successful candidate will have a good first degree in engineering or a related subject.
The studentship will be for three years starting on 1 October 2007. The stipend is £14,600 p.a. and University and College fees will be paid at either the EU or overseas student rate as appropriate. The work will be in collaboration with Professor K. Glover, Professor J. Woodhouse, and Professor R.S. Langley, and a post-doctoral research associate will also be funded by the project.
