CfA: University of Bath research studentships

Two cross-disciplinarys tudentships are available in the following themed area:

Trading-off security and liberty in the context of fuzzy borders: the European Case

PhD proposals are sought from candidates who wish to undertake research that focuses on the European Union's human security agenda. In particular the PhD research is envisioned as exploring the EU's approach to the limitations of domestic policies to manage the boundary between security and liberty. We would also welcome candidates interested in researching international cooperation within Europe, and how its engagement with the Middle East and beyond, can undermine the capability of Europe's citizens to find a non-contested balance between the values of security and liberty which suits their own cultures and traditions with regard to risk and freedoms.

The candidate would be based within Conflict and Security cluster in the Department of European Studies and Modern Languages but it is envisioned that the successful candidate(s) would be co-supervised with expertise drawn from other departments of the University focusing on social, economic and political security. The University approaches conflict and security from a variety of perspectives. The existing researchers in the Conflict and Security cluster work within a number of strands. A first strand of research explores threats to European security. A second strand focuses on the foreign, security and defence policies of the EU and its member states. The third strand of research focuses on non-European international relations so as to move beyond Eurocentric understandings of world politics.
