PhD Arabic and Islam "Islam and the Performing Arts in the Middle East", Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands

Job description
The project entitled ‘Islam and the performing arts in the Middle East and Europe: from cultural heritage to cultural citizenship’ focuses on new discourses and practices in Western Europe and the Middle East in which Islam and the performing arts are creatively merged. The project consists of three interrelated projects
carried out by two PhD students and one post-doc.

The project is funded by NWO. The successful applicants will become members of staff of Radboud University Nijmegen and will conduct their research within the framework of the research programme called ‘The Dynamics of Islamic Culture’. The subproject ‘Islam and the Performing Arts in the Middle East’ studies performing art productions by performers who view themselves as Muslims and their productions as pious. The subproject focuses particularly on new genres of Islamic performing art
productions, the way they are connected to new waves of piety, and the reception of these new Muslim art projects by diverse publics. The project will particularly focus on Morocco and Egypt. The study will be based on interviews with the performers and various publics, fans and critics. The candidate can state a preference for certain genres of the performing arts to be studied. The candidate will also assist in organizing academic and cultural activities.

Requirements
University Graduate
You have a Master’sdegree in Anthropology, Middle East Studies, or Arabic Studies with anextensive knowledge of the social sciences. You have a good command ofspoken Arabic.

Conditions of employment
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2.612
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract:
Maximum hours per week: 40

Additional conditions of employment:
Starting salary € 2.000. The initial appointment for the PhD position is 1.5 years with the possibility of extension by 2 years.
