Department of International History and Politics (HPI)
Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID), Geneva
Invites applications for its 4-year PhD program in International Studies commencing September 2009
The Department of International History and Politics specializes in teaching and researching the historical evolution of contemporary global structures and relationships. The combination of an internationally renowned teaching staff, a highly selective and cosmopolitan student body, and the availability of unique intellectual and cultural resources makes studying here a truly rewarding experience.
The Department offers two degrees—a two-year Master of International Studies (MIS) in International History and Politics, and a four-year Ph. D. Both degrees involve writing a research dissertation. Their aim is to prepare students for academic and research careers, and for challenging roles in government, and non-government, media, corporate, and other organizations.
The PhD programme of the department is a recognized and well established platform for advanced graduate research in international history and politics. With research and professional interests that are varied and versatile, the section’s faculty offers research supervision in a wide range of subjects, ranging from the foreign policy of major powers (the US, China, Russia) and the international system in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to matters related to national minorities, immigration and nationalism. A unique feature of the programme is the opportunity it offers to simultaneously combine customized course-work with fast-track immersion in the research and collective life of the section.
Each year the department admits a small number of accomplished PhD students with MA, MSc or equivalent degrees from recognized institutions worldwide, who can provide convincing evidence of their ability to pursue an original and significant piece of research to a successful conclusion. Doctoral students are eligible for a number of scholarships, teaching assistantships, and project-linked research assistantships. During their course of study, accepted students can benefit from a number of international exchange programs.
The deadline for application for external students is 31 January 2009.
