Dear colleagues,
The Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe is currently accepting submissions for the annual Graduate Student Workshop on Southeast Europe, which will take place at Harvard University on **February 12-13, 2009.**
Doctoral students are invited to submit proposals for papers to be delivered at the workshop. Proposals should be a maximum of 500 words, and should fall into one of the three following thematic units:
1) Leaders and Leadership - old and new - in Southeast Europe: The nature of political leadership in Southeast Europe has been defined for generations by powerful, charismatic elites. Is the political style of “Balkan strongmen� – from Ceausescu to Hoxha, and Zhivkov to Milosevic – so thoroughly engrained in the Balkan psyche that it is only a matter of time before their successors reappear? Or is the “charismatic authority� of the past giving way to a “routinized� elite? Papers can explore these and related questions from a historical and/or contemporary perspective. Papers can also consider leadership beyond the political context – e.g., grassroots/civil society leadership.
2) Diaspora as a Political and Economic Player in the States of Southeast Europe
Paper’s should explore the potential scale and significance of the role of diasporas in the political, institutional, and economic development of countries in Southeast Europe. Papers can examine the historical and contemporary roles of diaspora in the region; the evolving nature of citizenship and identity in Europe and its impact on Southeast Europe’s expatriate communities; the reconceptualization of diaspora; and related issues.
3) Westphalia, Neo-Westphalia or Post-Westphalia: Statehood in Southeast Europe
There is a burgeoning literature on the causes, forms and consequences of the transformation of the Westphalian state. Drawing from this literature, papers should discuss the implications of the changing nature of nation-state sovereignty as relevant to the countries of SE Europe in terms of their relationship with, or participation in, the European Union, as well as regarding the sustainability of states in the region.
The areas of focus for the workshop are Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, F.Y.R. of Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey.
A number of grants for travel and accommodation are available. The deadline for submission is **November 24, 2008.**
