Located in downtown Chicago, The John Marshall School Law School offers more than 40 courses in international economic and trade law. Taught by some of the leading practitioners and academics in the field from Chicago, Washington, DC, New York, California, Australia and Europe, these courses provide a strong foundation for lawyers wishing to specialize in international business and trade law.
Students enrolled in the program may design curricula that meet their individual professional needs. International students may complete the 24-credit program in two semesters (with an August starting date) or may take up to two years, taking a minimum of five credits per semester. In addition to coursework, students may take advantage of a one-credit externship with a law firm or corporation, lecture series and workshops, and ready access to the Chicago legal and business communities. International students may apply for January, June or August admission, with August being the most ideal starting date.

International Business & Trade (IBT) Externship
After completing the 10 credit hours of LL.M. courses, students have the option of applying for an IBT Externship. The IBT Externship provides a one-credit externship in a law firm or corporation to the students enrolled in the Master of Laws Program in International and Trade Law. The IBT Externship was designed to provide an opportunity for students in the LL.M. Program to gain first-hand experience in the practice of international business and trade law.
The Joint JD/LL.M. Degree Program in International Business and Trade Law John Marshall students interested in pursuing a Master of Laws degree in International Business and Trade Law may apply to become a joint JD/LL.M. candidate. Joint degree students will, in most cases, be able to complete the requirements of both programs with 104 credit hours. Joint degree students profit from taking classes with lawyers from a variety of backgrounds and practice experiences, both from the United States and overseas.

International students are not eligible for federal student loans, but some private education loan programs may be able to assist them. International Business & Trade (IBT) Scholarships
Limited merit scholarship support is available to IBT applicants based on the merits of the applicant's academic and work experience. Students will be considered for merit scholarships after they have been accepted to the LL.M. Program and do not need to complete a separate application.
The Melamed Fellowship in International Business and Trade Law
In 2001, The John Marshall Law School initiated a fellowship program to support advanced study in the field of international business and trade law. The fellowship, was made possible through a generous gift from Leo Melamed. A 1955 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, Melamed is chairman emeritus and senior policy advisor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. The Melamed Fellowship in International Business and Trade Law is awarded to a full-time student in John Marshall's LL.M. Program in International Business and Trade Law. The Melamed Fellow is selected on the basis of academic merit and the potential for excellence in the field of international business and trade law. The Fellow receives one-half tuition, a paid research
assistantship in the Center for International Business and Trade Law, and a $10,000 stipend. The Fellow is expected to complete the degree program in one calendar year. The Melamed Fellowship is currently being awarded every other year.
