The Euro-Balkan Institute’s Department of Gender Studies within the framework of Regional Network for Gender and Women’s Studies in Southeastern Europe is announcing a Call for Applications for the 2nd in the series of three colloquia on thematic and methodological- epistemic issues: ”Gender Studies of and for the Region of the Balkans“, to be held 21-25 of June, 2010 in Ohrid, Macedonia. The Colloquia will offer master classes held by prominent scholars from the Balkan region, provocative discussions and workshops with the focus on gender issues of possible epistemic approaches in creating regional perspectives.
Please note that participants must be junior scholars in the areas of social sciences and humanities interested in exploring the issues of gender (not older than 36 years of age) and be a national of one of the countries participating in the Network (Southeastern Europe), or a Swiss national in order for her/his accommodation costs (fully), travel (partly) and fee to be covered by the Organizer.
The deadline for submitting an application is March 28th , 2010.
The results from the selection process will be announced the latest till April 7th, 2010.

2010 in Ohrid, Macedonia. The Colloquia will offer master classes held by prominent scholars from the Balkan region, provocative discussions and workshops with the focus on gender issues of possible epistemic approaches in creating regional perspectives.
1. COLLOQUIUM 1: “Epistemologies of Identity Studies: Understanding Transition and Gender in the Region of Southeastern Europe.” This colloquium will identify and explore a) contemporary trends in the field of epistemology of social sciences and humanities b) the processes of transition and its gendered aspects that have marked the last two decades in the region, and c) the applicability of concepts and analysis
approaches that the epistemological models developed within the field of gender studies can provide for analysis of the phenomenon of the transition itself.
2. COLLOQUIUM 2: “Interdisciplinary Methodologies in the Study of Gendered Balkan Identities.” The colloquium will strive to arrive to answers – or, at least, to pose
the right questions – regarding use of interdisciplinary approach in researching identities in the Balkans; it will aspire to both explain the ways in which national identities in the region have been grounded as well as the variety of cultural representations of what is deemed to be the (cultural) Balkan identities. The gender perspective or gender sensitivity will be an integral part of the interdisciplinary study of the Balkans that this colloquium will propose.
3. Working language of the colloquium will be English.

Eligibility:
- Participant must be junior scholars in the areas of social sciences and humanities interested in exploring the issues of gender (not older than 36 years of age)
- Participant must submit an abstract for a presentation in one of the colloquium’s workshops
- Participant must be a national of one of the countries participating in the Network (Southeastern Europe), or a Swiss national in order for her/his accommodation costs (fully), travel (partly) and fee to be covered by the Organizer.
- Participants from other countries are also eligible to participate, but ineligible for the financial support provided by the organizers; for these applicants, the fee for participation will be 80 euro
Number of participants: 15
Process of selection: Selection Committee of five senior scholars, members of the Network and participants in the two Constitutive Meetings of establishing the Network will be set up; this Committee will evaluate the presentation proposals (the submitted abstracts) and based on the above mentioned criteria of eligibility and on the quality of the proposals will choose the participants of this event.

Interested applicants should submit an abstract (200 words) for a presentation in one of the colloquiums and short CV through available application form.
Deadline for submitting an application: March 28th 2010
Deadline for announcing the results of the selection process: April 7th 2010
Important note: Travel and accommodation costs for the Southeastern European and Swiss nationals will be covered by the organizer.
