PhD student Stem Cell Research (2x2 years)
(mandate 090/32/067)

Job description
Research at the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED, Hasselt University) focuses on disease and repair mechanisms in neurological diseases and the development of new therapeutics for these disorders. While stem cell therapy is successful in hematology, it is far from clear whether it can be considered a realistic option for neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). In this PhD project, we will evaluate the effect of (neurally induced) easily accessible stem cell populations in animal models of MS (EAE). The major focus will be on neuroregenerative effects in combination with immune modulatory aspects. In addition, genetic engineering strategies will be evaluated to enhance therapeutical value of exogenously applied stem cells. This project is performed in close collaboration with stem cell experts of the Universities of Antwerp and Leuven. The successful candidate will use a wide variety of neuroimmunological techniques such as cell cultures, experimental animal models, immunohistochemistr y, flow cytometry and molecular biology.

Profile and diploma
The applicant should hold a master degree in life sciences e.g. medical sciences, biomedical sciences, bioengineering, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology or equivalent. Laboratory research experience with experimental animal model systems and/or cell culture technology is a definite plus (e.g. during the Master's dissertation). Applicants should have excellent communication skills and sufficient knowledge of Dutch and/or English. The candidate is highly motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team. Also last year Masters students are encouraged to apply.
