ON THE OCCASSION OF THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BALKAN WARS

is organizing International scientific conference THE BALKANS: PEOPLE, WARS, AND PEACE
(4-5 November 2013, Skopje)
We have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the International scientific conference „The Balkans: people, wars, and peace“, organized by the Institute of National History, taking place in 4th and 5th of November 2013 in Skopje. Organized as a commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Balkan Wars, the aim of this scientific gathering is to stimulate further interdisciplinary research on the phenomena of war and peace which have occurred in the Balkans (and especially in Macedonia) throughout history, in order to gain a deeper understanding of their influence on certain historical processes, that leave a mark on all aspects of the lives of
individuals and of society.
Therefore, we propose the following research topics, but we remain open to your suggestions as well:
• The Balkan Wars and Macedonia
• The Balkans and the geopolitics of war and peace
• The civil wars in the Balkans
• Religion in between war and peace
• Peace efforts and movements in the Balkans
• The consequences of wars and peace treaties
• Migrations and ethnic changes in the Balkans
• The idea of home and forced migrations
• The Ottoman Empire vs. the Habsburg Monarchy: parallels and contacts
• The Macedonian movement for national liberation in the context of the Balkan
• Macedonian cultural and national processes and movements
• Concepts of cooperation between the national movements in the Balkans
• The World Wars and the Balkans
• Peace and spheres of influence after the WWII
• Macedonia – an eternal home to foreign soldiers
• Life on and behind the front line
• Children and war
• The mentality of war
• Identities in the Balkans during times of war and peace
• The Intelligentsia in (pre-)war times throughout history
• Conflict solution and peace negotiations
• Prisoners of war
• Crimes and law
• Memories of war and the politics of remembrance
• Women, war, and peace
• Ethnic stereotypes and national mythologies
Two round tables will be also held during the conference:
· „War and peace in Balkan historiographies and in history textbooks“
· „Macedonia in times of historical turning points
(1878-1913-2001)“ – A round table organized by the Department of Balkan Studies
The conference will take place in 4th and 5th of November 2013 in Skopje. Languages: Macedonian and English. The conference is being organized as a part of the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the foundation of the Institute of National History, therefore the organizer is not asking for a registration fee. The organizer does not cover travel expenses or accomodation. Reviewed versions of the communications will be published in a separate publication.
