Project Title: A functional metagenomics approach to the identification of cyanide/nitrile metabolising enzymes

This project aims to generate a metagenomic library from soil which will be used to identify novel cyanide and nitrile metabolising enzymes. Cyanide (HC=N) and nitriles (RC=N) are used widely in a variety of industries in Ireland. Microbial enzymes capable of metabolisng cyanide and nitriles provide valuable tools for bioremediation of waste and for the biocatalytic production of fine chemicals. Work to date has relied on the isolation of pure microbial isolates capable of cyanide and/or nitrile metabolism followed by identification of enzymes involved.

Maximum available for post graduate fees under this grant is 5000 for the two years. Current EU fees are 2100 per annum and current Non-EU fees are 4550 per annum. Funding is also available for travel, materials and equipment associated with the research to be undertaken.
