Scientist (Postdoctoral Researcher): Karlsruhe, Germany

Firma/Institution: Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH Land: Germany Position: Postdoc Position eingegangen am:16/01/2007

Beschreibung:
The Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH, member of the Helmholtz Society, is one of the leading research centers of Europe. Our institute for Nuclear Physics (IK) invites applications for the position of a

Scientist (Postdoctoral Researcher)

to strengten the activities in the EDELWEISS Dark Matter Search experiment, which is performed in the Modane underground laboratory in France.

Energetic neutronsscattering off target nuclei are a potential background for the direct detection of Dark Matter. These neutrons are either produced by (alpha,n) reactions or by deep inelastic scattering of cosmic muons in the vicinity of the bolometers. An active veto system indentifies muons and thus allows suppressing muon-induced neutrons. For future Dark Matter searches with a target on the 1-ton scale such as EURECA, the flux of these energetic neutrons has to be unterstood in detail in order to
suppress any neutron-induces background.

The applicant will be responisble to design, build and install an underground neutron monitor and perform measurements in combination with the existing muon veto system. She or he will further develop and supervice detailed Monte Carlo models of muon-induced spallation processes, detector responses and the data acquisition of the neutron detectors.

He or she will work in an excellent and very lively scientific environment. The group is embedded in the graduate school High Energy Physics and Particle Astrophysics (Graduiertenkolleg Hochenergiephysik und Teilchenastrophysik ), the Center of Elementary particle and Astroparticle physics CETA and the DFG Collaborative Research Center Transregio 27.

Applicants should have a PhD in nuclear or particle physics, a profound knowledge in particle astrophysics and expertise in experimental techniques of particel detection. Experience with Monte Carlo methods and simulation codes such as GEANT4 is desirable.

The initial contract is for a period of two years with the possibility of extension.

We prefer to balance the number of female and male employees in our company. Therefore we encourage female applicants to apply for this job.
