PhD Studentship, Investigating mechanisms of angiogenesis in vascular disease

This project, which is in collaboration with Professor Richard Donnelly and Dr Gillian Manning, involves the study of pigment epithelium derived enzymes factor and other pro and anti-angiogenic regulators in human retinal cells.

The project will involve the culture of retinal endothelial cells and a range of methodologies to provide detailed mechanistic information on the mechanisms and site(s) of action of pro and anit-angiogenic regulators.

The successful student will work in the laboratories within the Graduate-Entry Medical School at the Derby City General Hospital, which opened in 2003. They will be registered for a PhD (MPhil in the first instance).

A highly-motivated and enthusiastic student is required who should have at least a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate biological, chemical or physical science subject. Those with a 2.2, but with a relevant MSc or MPhil, will also be considered. Some laboratory experience is desirable.

Due to funding restrictions, this three-year studentship only provides funding for students from the UK/EU and is available for a period of three years. The funding will provide a postgraduate stipend (which was £12,300 in October 2006) and home fees.
