Investigating the Incidence, Prevalence, Mechanisms and Treatment of Cold Intolerance and Raynauds Phenomenon
This project, which is in collaboration with Dr Gillian Manning and Mr C Bainbridge, involves the study of cold intolerance and Raynauds Phenomenon.
The project will involve developing existing non-invasive techniques (cold provocation testing, laser doppler fluximetry and applanation tonometry) and applying them to both normal people and those with symptoms of cold intolerance. The aim of the work is to further investigate basic mechanisms and assess new treatment modalities.
The successful student will work in the clinical research facilities within the Graduate-Entry Medical School at the Derby City General Hospital, which opened in 2003. They will be registered for a PhD (MPhil in the first instance).
A highly-motivated and enthusiastic student is required who should have at least a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate biological subject or a professional degree such as physiotherapy or occupational therapy. Those with a 2.2, but with a relevant MSc or MPhil will also be considered. Some experience of undertaking clinical research is desirable.
Due to funding restrictions, this three-year studentship only provides funding for students from the UK/EU and is available for a period of three years. The funding will provide a postgraduate stipend (which was £12,300 in October 2006) and home fees.
