Postgraduate Teaching Fellowship, School of English Studies

The University of Nottingham is one of the UK's leading research universities and the School of English Studies, awarded a 5A in the 2001 RAE, is one of its top-rated research units. The School is notable for the range of its postgraduate opportunities and is organised into four broad and interconnected research groupings: Modern English Literature, Modern English Language, Medieval Studies and Drama and Performance. All staff are research-active and involved in advanced teaching and supervision, with many of them internationally-renowned authorities in their fields.

The School will be awarding one Postgraduate Teaching Fellowship from September 2007. Applications are invited from potential doctoral students who wish to work in any area of English studies in which we can offer supervision. Students may wish to consult the staff web pages for more detail on research in the School at: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/english/lookup/index.php.

Postgraduate Teaching Fellowships cover the cost of postgraduate HEU tuition fees for up to three years, and will in addition pay an annual maintenance grant of at least £12,300 per annum. All subject to satisfactory progress.

Postgraduate Teaching Fellowships have been designed to provide an alternative way to study and fund a PhD. By offering an integrated programme of research supervision, teacher training, and graduated teaching experience, they aim to provide students with the full range of professional skills needed to pursue an academic career. Students will be:

- assigned a supervisor for their research, whom they will meet on a regular basis
- assigned a mentor who will guide them through their teaching
- required to attend a programme of teacher-training courses
- further assisted by a programme of peer observation of their teaching

The teaching commitment itself will be graduated. Students will not be expected to undertake any teaching during the first semester of the first year. Teaching will start in the second semester and will rise to not more than six hours per week by the second semester of the third year.

Students will be formally assessed at the end of each year, and must be able to demonstrate competence in teaching and progress in their research in order for the Fellowship to be renewed. The formal assessment will also normally include upgrading from MPhil to PhD status (depending on the chosen research topic, this upgrade may take place at the end of either the first or the second year of the Fellowship). The maximum period for each Fellowship is three years. However, at the end of that three-year period, each student will receive an additional year of research supervision in order to help them complete their PhD.

Further teaching may also be available during this fourth year, although in this case students will be paid on a pro rata basis. It is therefore anticipated that the normal period for finishing a doctorate under this scheme will be four, rather than three years.

Students must already hold a good honours degree (i.e. 2:1) in English, or in a joint or combined honours degree including English, as well as an MA. Students who are currently enrolled in MA programmes are encouraged to apply, although the Fellowship will be conditional on successful completion of the MA, and such students would therefore not normally take up their Fellowship until January 2008. Whilst all potential students are eligible to apply for these awards, tuition fees will only be paid at HEU rates. Prior teaching experience is not necessary.

Candidates should complete the formal University Postgraduate Application Form and should include in their application a statement outlining their suitability for the Fellowship together with a detailed account of their research interests and an outline (of approximately 1,000 words) of their proposed PhD topic. Closing date: 31 March 2007.
