Applications are invited from well qualified and highly motivated individuals to join the Photonic and Radio Frequency Engineering Group on an EPSRC CASE (Co-operative Awards in Science and Engineering) PhD studentship in collaboration with a leading telecommunications company to perform research in the area of bit error rate and penalty evaluation in the presence of crosstalk in optical fibre networks.
Students should hold a minimum of a good upper second-class degree in electrical and electronic engineering, physics or closely related subjects. Mathematicians with an interest in physical science are also suitable to apply. A photonics/applied optics/optical communication based Masters qualification will be an advantage, although not essential.
The successful student will be expected to register for a PhD.
This studentship, which will commence mid 2007, is for a period of three years, covers tuition fees and maintenance at EPSRC rates (£12,300 per annum currently, increasing in subsequent years) supplemented by at least an additional £3,000 per annum from the industrial partner. Due to the nature of the funding, students must be eligible for EPSRC support and thus, typically must be classifiable as a Home (UK) student for the purpose of fees.
Informal enquiries, including those regarding eligibility and the application process, may be addressed to Dr A Phillips, Email: Andrew.Phillips@Nottingham.ac.uk.
Applications, with a covering letter, detailed CV and the names and addresses of two referees, should be sent to Dr A Phillips, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham, NG7 2RD. Tel: 0115 846 6708. Email: Andrew.Phillips@Nottingham.ac.uk.
