PhD position Charge Transport in Tailored Molecular Junctions

PhD position Charge Transport in Tailored Molecular Junctions at Electrochemical Solid/Liquid Interfaces

For our Institute of Bio- and Nanosystems, Molecular Electrochemistry Group (IBN-3/ISG-3) we are seeking a
PhD Fellow
for a three-year PhD project.

Tasks:

The research is part of an interdisciplinary and international co-operative program on self-assembly and charge transport in metal│ molecule& #9474;metal nanostructures at electrochemical interfaces. We aim to locally explore electron transport and switching processes of single molecules as well as molecular assemblies by employing concepts of electrolyte gating in an electrochemical environment. The experimental strategies are based on a vertical scanning probe microscopy configuration and a complementary horizontal arrangement of nanoelectrodes prepared by lithographic techniques. The project will provide unique new insight into electron transport processes in nanostructured assemblies and tailored molecular hybrid structures which are triggered by electrical stimuli with potential applications towards molecular redox switches and storage elements.

Requirements:

MSc or equivalent degree in chemistry, physics or a related discipline with an overall grade of at least "good" as well as a strong interest in interfacial electrochemistry and nanoelectrochemistr y. A strong experimental and theoretical background in analytical and measuring techniques is essential. The candidate should have extensive experience in setting up experiments. Working knowledge in the use and application of in situ scanning probe techniques would be an asset, but is not essential. The candidate should be highly motivated, fluent in English or German, have good interpersonal communication skills, and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists.
