PhD position SEIRAS Studies of Functionalized Electrochemical Solid/Liquid Interfaces – A Steady-state and a Time-resolved Approach

For our Institute of Bio- and Nanosystems, Molecular Electrochemistry Group (IBN-3/ISG-3) we are seeking a PhD Fellow for a three-year PhD project.

Tasks:

The research is focused on vibration spectroscopy at solid/liquid interfaces employing in situ surface-enhanced infrared reflection-absorpti on spectroscopy (SEIRAS) under conditions of attenuated total reflection (ATR). The first goal is to explore the vibronic properties of the electrochemical double layer on thin mono- and bimetallic films (e.g. gold, silver, platinum,..) . The second goal comprises studies of functionalized adlayers focusing on interfacial electron transfer as well as on selected electrocatalytic processes under “steady-state” conditions and in time-resolved experiments. The strategy involves the combination of structure-sensitive spectroscopic studies with in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and "macroscopic" electrochemical techniques based on custom-made single crystal electrodes. The program is part of an international collaboration, and offers unique opportunities in a very active interdisciplinary group of young scientists and an attractive
research environment.

Requirements:

MSc or equivalent degree in chemistry, physics or a related discipline with an overall grade of at least "good" as well as a strong interest in interfacial electrochemistry and spectroscopy. The candidate should have a strong background in common analytical and spectroscopic methods and experience in setting up experiments. Working knowledge in vibration spectroscopy at surfaces would be an asset, but is not essential. The candidate should be highly motivated, fluent in English or German, have good interpersonal communication skills, and be interested in working in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists

Equal opportunities is a cornerstone of our staff policy. Applications from disabled persons are welcomed. The salary of the PhD fellow will be based on the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD). Depending on the candidate’s profile and the subject of his/her PhD thesis an additional allowance may be granted. Please send your application, including curriculum vitae, examination certificates, statements on expertise and references to: Mr. P. H. Müller, Institut für Bio- und Nanosysteme, Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, 52425 Jülich, Germany.
