PhD Position in Microbial Adhesion - University Medical Center Groningen Department of Biomedical Engineering

PhD Position Microbial Adhesion
University Medical Center Groningen Department of Biomedical Engineering, Bioadhesion section
Job description
Project: Microbial Adhesion to Super Hydrophilic, Hyperbranched
Coatings for Biomedical Devices

Biomaterials are an integral component of modern healthcare in the Western world, although implant related infection remains a major cause of rejection and replacement. Implant-related infections caused by microbial biofilms start with the formation of conditioning film followed by initial contact of microorganisms with the biomaterial surface. Microorganisms adhere to biomedical device surfaces due to
unfavourable surface properties that can be alleviated by the application of suitable (antimicrobial) coatings. This project is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) through the STW Foundation, and carried out in collaboration with the Department of Polymer Chemistry-RuG; the aim is to evaluate innovative coatings on biomedical materials for their ability to resist microbial adhesion and biofilm formation. Super hydrophilic, hyperbranched coatings will be prepared by a PhD student, working at the Department of Polymer Chemistry, and the microbiological evaluations by the PhD student currently applied for at the department of Biomedical Engineering- UMCG.

Required education/skills: Higher Professional Education
The Aim is: completion of a PhD dissertation
The project is scheduled to start between September 1, 2007 and February 1, 2008.
The position is open to students with a Master's degree in Microbiology, Biomedical Technology, Physics or Chemistry, with experience in biofilm research. The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. This may mean that you will need to build up enough resistance to Hepatitis B before you can be appointed.
