PhD Research in Health Psychology - Utrecht University

PhD-Researcher
Utrecht University

Job description
The Research Institute for Psychology & Health is a KNAW accredited research school, with participation of some 115 senior researchers and 75 PhD-candidates from ten universities in the Netherlands and Belgium. The research project is part of the research program of a group of researchers at the Departments of Clinical & Health
Psychology and Social Psychology (collaborating within P&H) on the self-regulation of health behaviour, lead by professor Denise de Ridder. This group has strong interests in both applied and theoretical approaches to the study of health behaviour.

The project:
The project challenges the widely shared belief that negative emotions lead to overeating because eating dampens the negative effects of bad moods and proposes a novel approach for understanding the relationship between negative moods and overeating. Three hypotheses will be examined in a series of experimental studies: 1) negative emotions are not responsible for overeating; 2) eating in the emotional case does not decrease the impact of the emotional encounter; and 3) dysfunctional emotion-regulation strategies rather than negative emotions per se are the cause of overeating.

The task:
The PhD-student will elaborate the theoretical and practical design of the study, run a series of experimental studies, analyze data and write articles at a standard for submission to international scientific journals.

Required education/skills:
A Master's Degree in Clinical or Health Psychology, Social Psychology or another relevant branch of psychology. Knowledge of and experience with experimental studies. Expertise with respect to complex methods of statistical analysis and good organizational skills. A keen interest in theories of self-regulation and/or emotion-regulation.
