Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program

Three award programs are offered for research in residence at the museums, research institutes, and offices of the Smithsonian Institution. Open to graduate students conducting individual research, predoctoral students conducting dissertation research and postdoctoral scholars from any country.

Level of Study: Prospective/ Current Graduate Student. Working on Doctoral Dissertation. Postdoctoral Scholar

Areas of Study: Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, School of Arts and Architecture, School of Public Health

Specific Fields Fellowships: Anthropology, Archaeology, Astrophysics and Astronomy, Animal Behavior, Ecology and Environmental Science (including an emphasis on the tropics), Earth Sciences and Paleobiology, Evolutionary and Systematic Biology, History of Science and Technology, History of Art (especially American contemporary, African and Asian art, twentieth-century. American crafts, and decorative arts),
Social and Cultural History of the United States, Folklife.

Eligibility Requirements:
Graduate: at least one semester of graduate study completed.
Predoctoral: PhD course work completed.
Postdoctoral: PhD awarded within the last 7 years.

Average Award Amount:
Graduate stipends are $4,500 for a 10 week period.
Predoctoral stipends valued at $20,000 annual, are for periods of 3 to 12 months.
Postdoctoral stipends valued at $35,000 annual.
