CfP: Transatlantic Dialogues. Eastern Europe, The U.S., and Post-Cold War Cultural Spaces

Transatlantic Dialogues. Eastern Europe, The U.S., and Post-Cold War Cultural Spaces

This Workshop is organized within the framework of the Fifth International Conference of the Romanian Association for American Studies, "The Sense of America. Histories into Text."

Time and place: 24th of May, 2008, The University of Bucharest, Bucharest.

The workshop focuses on the topical issue of transatlantic relations in the post-Cold War period, and specifically addresses the question of transatlantic exchanges, representations and misrepresentations that characterize this age of transition and upheaval. Post-communism, itself a highly volatile term, has come to signify a cluster of historical, social, cultural, economic discourses about change in Eastern Europe. While Cold War mythology was largely responsible for drawing up a vision of a highly polarized world, the post-Cold War configuration is still undergoing a process of negotiation to account for new structures of organization that cut across fields as diverse as culture, literature, education, politics, social life, economics. The organisers welcome approaches dealing with the multiple binds of post-Cold War configurations from a variety of disciplinary and inter-disciplinary perspectives including literature, history, political science, sociology, economy, visual arts, media and film studies, popular culture. Papers may address themes such as those below:
- converging discourses: post-communism, post-colonialism, post-modernism
- the post-communist transition and the renegotiation of Eastern European identity
- the postmodern ethos and post-Cold War cultural/social dynamics
- Eastern European predicaments and models for the future
- the "end of history" in transatlantic perspective
- transatlantic relations in the age of globalization
- U.S. cultures in Eastern European contexts
- exporting Eastern Europe to the USA: techniques of representation and dissemination
- post-Cold War U.S. literary and media discourses about Eastern Europe.

The organizers are inviting proposals for 20 minute papers on these and other themes related to the topic of the workshop.

Please submit 300-word abstracts by January 31st 2008 to the following address:
transatlanticdialog ues@gmail. com

A selection of papers will be published in the workshop proceedings.

For further questions, please contact prof. dr. Rodica Mihaila, Dr. Roxana Oltean or Ioana Luca at transatlanticdialog ues@gmail. com

*The workshop is part of the research project entitled The Romanian Cultural Space in Transatlantic Perspective: From Postcommunism to Post-accession supported by UEFISCSU (PNII Idei 1000/2007).

CfP: Youth Projects in South-East Europe

Call for proposals

for Youth Projects in South-East Europe

Schüler Helfen Leben (SHL) is a charitable organization which wants to support youth projects in South-East-Europe to contribute to peace, reconciliation and democracy in the whole region step by step. Our current balance: more than 15 million Euros donated and more than a hundred projects in Albania, Croatia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Romania, Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo.

Since 1998 SHL regularly calls on pupils throughout Germany to participate in the Social Day. For one day pupils will not go to school but work and donate their earnings to SHL. In order not to limit the participation of these young people to the one-day-action the selection of projects will be partly put in their hands.

SHL is looking for non-profit organizations, which want to use a part of the Social Day donations for a project implemented on their own. These projects should aim at a direct support of children and young people. We are looking for projects, which follow an inter-ethnic approach and strengthen local organisations. Especially in rural areas we see a particular need for more intensive youth work.

Projects from following countries in South-East Europe can apply: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and UNMIK Kosovo.

We are looking forward to hearing about your ideas!

New Publication: Media reporting trends in 2007

Dear friends and colleagues,

Media Intelligence Agency has issued a special issue of its Examine magazine, on the way media reported on the key events in the region in 2007 and prospects in the New Year.

For Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2007 was a year of many downs and few ups for BiH, and it went from bad to worse. However, sudden initialing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement helped ending the year with a dose of optimism… Compared to the 1990s, it appears that Serbia made a lot of progress. While it fought some difficult battles this year, biggest of them are yet to follow. 2008 will truly be a turning point for Serbia. Some critical decisions are to be made, as stability of entire region depends on them… Croatia moved a long way ahead from its neighbors. Nevertheless, Croatians are still fixated by war crimes, corruption and uneasy political agreements.

Magazine also features the Media Personalities of The Year and gives a brief overview of the events unrelated to politics that marked 2007.

CfA: Network of Young European Refugees and Exiles, Budapest, 11-18.02.2008

Seminar supported by EYC in Budapest 11-18 February...

The aim of the meeting is to create/ launch a Network of Young European Refugees and Exiles as a step forward in organising young refugees and exiles to advocate their common concerns and to act as multipliers. The long-term aim is to ensure and further develop existing and new forms of participation of youth in decision-making processes, especially vulnerable young people, young refugees, who have less access to decision-making structures, and are under-represented in society, sometimes even "invisible". The long-term aim would be in line with a point that seems to have been strongly emphasized by the participants of the Strasbourg seminar: there are many different practices with different standards in the area of asylum throughout Europe. As it is obvious that a common asylum system at the European level is needed, it is also obvious that in the process of development of such a system, the youth, young refugees must participate and their opinions taken into account,
which is not the case now.

Background of the meeting

"Refugees , Internally displaced persons, Exiles, "sans papier"… is a daily reality for plenty of young people in today's Europe. How can they participate in the development of the societies they are living in? Are their human rights respected in the societies they are living in? Are they able to break down the solitude and prejudices which are related to their situation? All these questions should be tackled on European institutions agendas. Because youth participation is inclusive it should also be for and by young refugees. Therefore it should be taken into account in the development of youth policies at national and European levels.

In December 2006, in the framework of the Campaign “All different-All equal”, the Youth Sector of the Council of Europe, in cooperation with UNHCR, organised in Strasbourg a seminar “Being young refugees in Europe today”, stressing that the European Youth Centers are also spaces for young refugees; that youth participation, youth policy, human rights and intercultural learning cannot be promoted without listening, without hearing all young people, and therefore also young people who are refugees.

During this seminar the participants had the opportunity to elaborate on issues that young refugees face. In the Final Recommendations of the above mentioned seminar the participants stressed out that they are “highly concerned by the plight of young exiles in Europe, being deprived of dignity and subject to incessant multiple discrimination, prejudices, violations of the fundamental human rights;
carrying the burden of our personal testimonies, life stories, having suffered and escaped from terror, violence, armed conflicts, persecution, fears, poverty;
traumatized by witnessing atrocities and being tortured by uncertainty of the fate of our beloved ones left behind; wandering around feeling no where as home...”
All the above constitute the every day life of young refugees and exiles in Europe today…

This seminar reached its goal: to enable participants to look into the realities of young refugees in their everyday life, to identify problems and difficulties and to come up with recommendations in order to improve their situation. The problems identified are that young refugees lack information and means to participate and tend to get marginalized having some additional concerns compared to other young people (learning a new language, a new culture, being the translator for their parents, making their life alone even very young…).

At the end of the seminar and based on the conclusions formulated in the final Recommendations (sent out to decision making bodies), it became obvious that there should be a follow up, that it is necessary for young people to have a kind of tool which they will use in order to make their voices heard, to advocate and raise awareness on young refugees and exiles needs and rights, as also to enhance their participation and empowerment. We, the participants of the seminar, set up a very ambitious goal: the creation of a European Network to advocate the recognized issues that prevent young refugees from active participation and representation in a collective manner.

The Directorate of Youth and Sports of the Council of Europe created and hosted an e-platform where we exchanged our ideas and thoughts and composed a project proposal for a meeting to set up the basis of the Network. The project proposal was submitted by the Greek Council for Refugees, Community Development Center (Montenegro) , Hi-Neighbour (Serbia) and the Lithuanian Red Cross Society, to the European Youth Foundation. The proposal has been approved in June 2007 and the EYF and UNHCR allocated a grant to enable the creation of a European network of young refugees and exiles which brings us here organizing this new event.

Aim of the meeting

The aim of the meeting is to create/ launch a Network of Young European Refugees and Exiles as a step forward in organising young refugees and exiles to advocate their common concerns and to act as multipliers. The long-term aim is to ensure and further develop existing and new forms of participation of youth in decision-making processes, especially vulnerable young people, young refugees, who have less access to decision-making structures, and are under-represented in society, sometimes even “invisible”. The long-term aim would be in line with a point that seems to have been strongly emphasized by the participants of the Strasbourg seminar: there are many different practices with different standards in the area of asylum throughout Europe. As it is obvious that a common asylum system at the European level is needed, it is also obvious that in the process of development of such a system, the youth, young refugees must participate and their opinions taken into account, which is not the case now.
In order to have the voice of young refugees heard and have the aim achieved there is a pressing need and will to connect various youth organizations from the European civil society. Strategic linking, joint work and synergy will enable them achieve the aims and objectives.

Objectives

The following objectives for the meeting are based on the conclusions formulated in the Recommendations made by 32 young people living in 27 European countries:

 The framework of the Network
 The mission and vision of the Network
 The aims and goals
 The Statute of the Network
 The organizational structure
 The participatory and membership scheme
 Draft action plan
 Longer term strategy
 Concrete project proposal for future
 Follow up;

Methodology

The meeting is based on several components, such as discussion in panel and work in groups, exchange of experiences and best practices.
During the first 2 days participants will elaborate on the need of the Network, its framework, mission, its aims and objectives, its structure and synthesis, its modus operandi. In the last 2 days participants will concretely work on the formulation of the statute, membership and funding scheme, a proposal for follow up will be drafted for fundraising purposes.

The team is composed of participants from the seminar in December 2006 supported by experienced trainers.

Participants' experiences, active participation, group-work and teamwork, as well as theoretical inputs will characterize the programme.

Common conclusions will be formulated and adopted by the participants.

Profile of participants

The meeting will bring together 25 participants representing:

 participants of the seminar “Being a Young Refugee in Europe Today”
 young people who were once forced to move (refugees, asylum seekers, IDPs…)
 young people working with people forced to move, and
 experienced guests and activists from other similar networks who can provide useful advice about creation of a European network

All participants selected for this meeting must be:

Participants should be young refugees as well as young refugee workers aged from 18-35. They will be residents of the Council of Europe member states, involved/interested in displacement related issues. Indeed, participation will be open to young refugees structures that are not solid structured (in some countries there are no real recognised structures sometimes). No one is to be excluded.

All of them should be motivated and ready to act as multipliers towards their peers after the meeting and to invest themselves in the long term establishment of a network of young refugees.

Finally, participants should be able to communicate in English, as it is the only working language of the meeting.

Application Procedure and Selection of Participants

Applications should be sent to the Community Development Centre (CDC) in Podgorica, Montenegro.

People working with refugees should add a letter of support from the sending organisation. The letter of support for the candidate should explain the need and the value for the sending organisation or authority and for the candidate to attend this meeting. If an organisation wishes to propose more than one candidate, the order of priority should be clearly indicated and justification for the priority list should be provided.

25 participants will be selected on the basis of the profile outlined above by the Steering Committee. The team will try to respect the organisations’ priorities as far as possible, but also to ensure a geographical balance, gender balance, different types of experiences, cultural backgrounds, organisations, institutions. The motivation and experiences of the individual participants are among the criteria taken into consideration during the selection process.

The selection of candidates will take place in January 2008. Selected candidates will be informed of their selection just after the next team preparatory meeting on 10-11th January 2008. A waiting list may be drawn up.

The Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre (VAR) is a Federal Public Scientific Institution located on two campuses at Uccle and Tervuren, near Brussels. In the framework of sustainable and socially acceptable agriculture, the VAR, through scientific research, expert advice, and the provision of services, contributes to a pro-active policy as regards safe food production, animal health, and public health on the federal and international levels.

To fulfill this task, 60 scientific and 150 technical staff are active in applied research in the fields of transmissible animal diseases, and of safety of animal and crop products. To support its growth and research activities carried out at the Department of Bacteriology and Immunology, VAR is currently seeking candidates for a PhD position.

*Framework and tasks*
Paratuberculosis or Johne's disease is an enzootic bacterial disease in ruminants, due to Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map), characterised by a chronic and fatal diahrrea. Its prevalence has reached endemicity in European dairy herds and in the sheep, goat and deer farming sectors, with 70-80% herd prevalence in some regions. Paratuberculosis is also responsible for persistant environmental contamination of pastures and water catchment areas. Current diagnostic methods lack sensitivity, and current vaccines have little impact on the prevalence of infection;
therefore both require improvement for disease control.

The aim of this research is to explore and optimise the diagnostic and vaccine potential of recently identified Map antigens in cattle. For this purpose diagnostic antigen candidates will be targeted to Antigen Presenting Cell (APC) surface receptors in a recombinant fusion strategy to enhance antigen in vitro uptake and presentation, and vaccine candidates will be targeted to cattle dendritic cell surface markers to enhance and modulate antigen presentation.

The research supports ongoing programs on M. bovis diagnosis and Map antigen discovery at the Veterinary Agrochemical Research Centre, and should lead to a PhD at Université Libre de Bruxelles. It will be carried out in both institutions under joint supervision of Dr M. Govaerts, VAR, and Prof dr M. Moser, ULB, in collaboration with external partners. The candidate will be recruited by VAR under a one-year, twice renewable research contract.

PhD Scholarship in Wave Modelling - Swinburne University of Technology

PhD Scholarship co-sponsored by Swinburne University of Technology and Woodside Energy Ltd Wave Modelling within Extreme Tropical Cyclones Physical Oceanography

*Victoria, Australia*

*BACKGROUND:
*Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) and Woodside Energy Ltd (WEL) are seeking a suitably qualified student to undertake post-graduate study to develop a wave forecast model suitable for extreme tropical cyclone conditions.

*About Swinburne University of Technology
*Swinburne University of Technology is a large multi-sectoral and multi-campus institution with a stated mission to be a pre-eminent entrepreneurial university from the Asia-Pacific, thriving on new ideas and knowledge and exploiting its intersectoral heritage to create value for its stakeholders.

The Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences is host to most of the engineering activities at Swinburne as well as key programs in aviation and photonics. The Coastal Engineering and Physical Oceanography group of the Faculty specialises in research of deep-water and finite-depth wave dynamics, spectral modelling of wind-generated waves, wave breaking and dissipation, air-sea interaction, wave-bottom interaction and turbulence.

*About Woodside Energy Ltd
*Woodside Energy Ltd. (WEL) is Australia's largest offshore oil and gas producer and operator of the North West Shelf project. Over a period of 20 years, WEL has been conducting and sponsoring applied and fundamental oceanographic research. The issue of enhancing understanding of extreme tropical cyclones, and in particular improving the wave forecast under such conditions, is among the current priorities of the research sponsored by the company.

*PROJECT ABSTRACT:
*Accurate wind wave models are essential for all elements of extreme air-sea interaction, including loads on structures, upper-ocean mixing and bottom boundary layer formation. At present, physics of such models is mostly based on theory and experiments applicable to moderate wind/wave situations, which physics is then extrapolated to extreme conditions. Since air-sea interaction at such tropical cyclones is known to be different, the models manifest inconsistent results. This is a major concern for engineering design applications. The project is intended to produce, parameterise, implement and test new energy source/.sink functions for the wave forecast models, based on direct measurements in the extreme tropical cyclones and on recent theoretical advances in this field.

*SELECTION CRITERIA*

1. Honours degree in Physical or Mathematical Sciences (essential)

The Coastal Engineering and Physical Oceanography group of the Faculty specialises in research of deep-water and finite-depth wave dynamics, spectral modelling of wind-generated waves, wave breaking and dissipation, air-sea interaction, wave-bottom interaction and turbulence.

*PROJECT ABSTRACT:
*Over the past 20 years satellite-based radar altimeters have made measurements of ocean wave conditions. During this period of time a total of 7 different altimeter missions have been flown. The combined database represents the most comprehensive dataset ever developed of global wave conditions. This project involves developing a combined database from these separate missions and then applying this to the determination of extreme wave conditions at any location on the global oceans. The resulting database has the potential to drastically change the way in which ocean wave design is undertaken.

Integrative cancer bioinformatics: Postdoc position

Basic cancer research through the development of appropriate model systems such as mice, rats and cell lines is a field of special interest within the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Ultimately, the goal is to combine this information with human tumor data in order to deliver personalised treatment to patients.

Recent developments in high-throughput genomic technologies have made it possible to significantly further this research by unraveling the role of large numbers of genes in important cellular processes. These technologies include, amongst other, high-throughput high content screening (HTHCS) and insertional mutagenesis screens.

In HTHCS, a large RNAi library in combination with cell-based assays, fluorescence- based reagents, automated fluorescence microscopy and image analysis are employed to study complex cellular phenotypes. In HTHCS one can study the consequence of inactivation of large numbers of individual genes, in a collection of individual cells, measured by multiple cellular parameters.

In retroviral insertional mutagenesis, retroviruses integrate in the genome of (genetically manipulated) mice, causing tumors by either activating oncogenes of de-activating tumor suppressors. By studying the genomic distribution patterns of the viral integration sites and the gene expression of associated tumors, valuable information about genes and pathways involved in tumorigenesis can be obtained.

Each of these technologies generates large, heterogeneous, complex datasets.

Currently, many of these datasets are simply employed to extract an interesting new hit (e.g. a putative new oncogene) from a screen. By performing an integrative analysis of the data we want to work towards developing a 'systems level' understanding of the pathways and processes involved in tumorigenesis. The computational challenges that need to be addressed include the development of: 1) integrative models for 'experiment specific' data and 'experiment independent' data to identify pathways and interactions between pathways relevant to tumor development; 2) approaches to associate (perturbations to) the identified pathways to phenotypic outcomes; 3) cross-species comparisons to translate findings from model systems (cell lines and mouse models) to the human system, and integration of the findings from model systems with data from human tumors to predict outcome and therapy response.

About the candidate - requirements:

Ph.D in a relevant computational discipline such as Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Physics with experience in Bioinformatics and/or Machine learning. Applicants that hold a Ph.D in the life sciences, but with substantial experience in bioinformatics are also encouraged to apply. The researcher appointed in this position will function as a liaison between the Bioinformatics group and the research groups within the Netherlands Cancer Institute performing the screens.

About the employer:

The position is embedded within the Bioinformatics and statistics group lead by Dr Lodewyk Wessels (http://bioinformati cs.nki.nl). This group closely collaborates with the groups of Drs Rene Bernards, Roderick Beijerbergen, Anton Berns, Maarten van Lohuizen and Laura van 't Veer on the topics listed above. The candidate will also be closely interacting with these groups on the relevant topics. Research in the Netherlands Cancer Institute covers all major areas of cancer research, with special emphasis on mouse models, mouse (reverse) genetics, cell biology, immunology, translational research requiring close collaboration between clinical and basic scientists and epidemiology and psychosocial cancer research.

Employment conditions:

The employment conditions follow general employment rules as laid down in the 'CAO' for hospitals. The salary will be determined depending on education and experience.

USA: International Students at Lawrence University

This year Lawrence counts 166 international students (out of a total student population of 1400) representing 47 countries among our student body, making Lawrence University one of the most diverse small colleges in the United States. In addition to these students, we also have a number of U.S. expatriates at Lawrence.

As you know, Lawrence has made a commitment to internationalism in a number of ways, one of which is through financial aid for international students. We provide substantial merit and need-based aid to a majority of our international students. We award scholarships that range in value from $7,000 USD to full-tuition, and we base our evaluation on a combination of academic merit, country of origin, and financial need.

I invite you to take a tour of the Lawrence campus through our Video Tour online at: http://www.lawrence .edu/admissions/ about/videotour. shtml

If you have questions about Lawrence or would like to receive more information about Lawrence, please contact me at nicole.getchell@ lawrence. edu or 1-920-832-7067.

CfP: Framing struggles: Critical Approaches to Anthropology and Sociology

Framing Struggles: Critical Approaches to Anthropology and Sociology
Postgraduate Conference

Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology
Central European University
Budapest, Hungary
13-14 June 2008

Until recently, most social research has focused on political and economic struggles to the detriment of understanding cultural struggles. But an undue focus on culture tends to ignore the contested nature of economic and political interactions that provide the structural underpinnings to cultural form and content. Anthropology can contribute equally to understanding frames of struggles, and framing the relevant problematic that needs to be exposed to public scrutiny, while sociology is able to situate and analyse these struggles in a broader perspective through its focus on macro-micro interactions.

The main purpose of this trans-disciplinary conference is to investigate how cultural, political, and economic struggles are framed, both by actors and scholars. By framing struggles we mean the ways in which participants themselves construe and delimit the meanings of their actions in an era of accelerating global changes, as well as the manner in which scholars and researchers select their own frames of reference to make sense of these social upheavals. Regarding social phenomena in an integrated and multifaceted persepective, the conference will reflect on and mediate between broad, distant, and sometimes seemingly incompatible research fields and approaches e.g., religious studies, studies of popular culture, as well as social movement studies and the scholarship on migration and informal economy.

Concentrating on a variety of issues concerning struggles, we seek to encourage critical ethnographic/ sociological research enriched by theoretical grounding. The conference will tackle the issue of framing struggles from four main perspectives in the following panels (also see the more detailed descriptions further down):

Panel I: Borders, Economy, Conflict

Panel II: Approaching Religious Modernities: Constructions, Contestations, Mobilizations

Panel III: Performing and Representing Culture, Ethnicity and Gender

Panel IV: Activism in (Post-)Socialist Contexts

The conference will take place 13-14 June 2008, at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. Each applicant should submit an abstract (max. 250 words) and introduction of their academic affiliation/ research topic/general research interests (max. 100 words). The deadline for submissions of the abstracts is the 1 February 2008. Please send to: framing.struggles@ gmail.com. (contact person Mariya Ivancheva)

As each panel will have a discussant - an invited scholars from the relevant field, the approved - candidates will have to submit a full-length paper by the 01 st of May 2008. This is a strict deadline. Conference papers will be made available to all participants in advance.

The organizers will be able to provide partial reimbursement of travel expenses and accommodation at a hostel in central Budapest to a number of panel participants. A possibility exists that some participants be hosted by students from the department – please indicate if you are interested in such option.

Participants are also requested to state whether they would need a visa for Hungary so that organizers can assist in the visa process.

Description of Panels
Panel I: Borders, Economy, Conflict

This panel seeks to scrutinize from a critical and trans-disciplinary perspective the features of borders: physical and symbolic, fixed and transgressed. How they separate different categories of actors, while framing and enforcing their social roles and identities. However economic, political, and cultural borders need not necessarily imply "bounded-ness" . What we aim to do is to pinpoint the fluidity, volatility, and mutability of the concept of 'borders'. Furthermore, we seek to discuss how different sorts of conflict reinforce, but also displace borders in various everyday contexts and the manner in which the micro-macro actors involved negtate and define them through their practices, interactions, and collisions.

The panel invites papers and visual materials that actively engage with issues of borders, border-crossing economies, and conflict. Contributions should include, but are not necessarily restricted to questions such as:

* Border sovereignty: empire(s) and nation-state( s)
* Border trouble: conflict and trade
* Micro actors vs. macro actors: border economies in a regional and global context
* Trafficking in humans, arms, and drugs
* Transnational (under)classes, informal economies, and host states
* International refugees and no-man's land(s)
* Economy without borders: transnational corporations, international organizations, and global capital

Panel II: Approaching Religious Modernities: Constructions, Contestations, Mobilizations

The persistence of religion within processes of social change all around the globe has called into question the secularization paradigm. Social scientists have been forced to reassess the theoretical and methodological categories for understanding the shifting location of religion in various societies and to be more open to the notion of multiple religious modernities. We are thus in a fruitful reflexive moment which could open new perspectives on religious phenomena entangled in social processes.
Our panel revolves around a number of issues which are still waiting for adequate theoretical and methodological approaches:

* The shifting location of religion within the public sphere in various social contexts
* Constructing and contesting boundaries between the 'religious' and the 'secular'
* Agents active in the processes of construction/ contestation (state, church, civil or religious associations, academia, new religious movements etc.)
* The framing of contemporary religious mobilization, both within world religions (Islam, Christianity, Hinduism etc.) and indigenous religions
* The emergence of new religious movements (e.g., global religions such as Pentecostalism)
* The impact of these movements on nation-states and traditional (historical) religions
* Socio-cultural and political strategies employed by religious actors in new contexts dominated by global media technologies and global horizons of consumption

Panel III: Performing and Representing Culture, Ethnicity and Gender

Performance has become a catch-all term to refer to the practices of agents as opposed to a prior focus on structure. In the new era of all kinds of promotion initiatives on behalf of agency, the belief that agents can resist or contest forces of domination has become widely celebrated. But this capacity can be called into question and is itself problematic. Indeed, such performances cannot be properly understood without taking into consideration their often mediated or represented character. Therefore, it is worth looking at the interplay between performances and representation, especially when these performances become embedded in global networks of production and circulation.

The main themes of this panel would include the following issues:

* Markets and media as a facilitators of cultural exchanges
* Struggles over cultural recognition through the staging of performances (arts, sports, tourist practices, etc.)
* Performing gender/race/ ethnicity
* The transformation of performances through processes of interaction and mediation
* Political institutions and the representation of cultural practices
* Ethnographic writing as representation and the framing paradigm: the responsibility of ethnographers

Panel IV: Activism in (Post-)Socialist Contexts

In societies where leftist themes of class, economic redistribution, and social justice have formed or still form the regime's dominant discourse, social movements trying to make demands related to such themes face complex problems, for example of avoiding cooptation or negative associations. This phenomenon can be seen in artern social democracies, but it is equally present under social democratic regimes in the global south that have taken a "Third Way". And these complexities are all the more present among activist groups in societies with a history of repressive "really exiting" socialism, such as in Eastern Europe.
Our panel calls for papers that explore the complexity of political contention in such historically determined political contexts. These could address topics such as:

* Framing struggles of oppositional groups under repressive socialist regimes
* Activists strategies in a context dominated by social-democratic rhetoric
* (Dis)Continuities in performances and narratives of present and past dissent
* Strategies for alignment with trans-national activist campaigns
* Relevance of class-based claim making: past and presence
* Framing of collective and individual memory in processes of political transition
* Left- or right-wing protest: (un)civil society in post-socialist contexts
