The University of Manchester Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award (DHPA)

*Anticipated start date for project:* September 2008

Each scholarship is jointly funded by one public sector (Research Council) and one private sector partner. The award meets the full cost of overseas tuition fees and provides a maintenance stipend, which was *£12,600* per annum in 2007/08. The maintenance stipend will increase slightly for 2008/9 and the exact amount will be confirmed in January 2008. PhD projects can be supported for between three and four years, subject to satisfactory progress.

*Qualifications applicants should have/expected to receive*

The awards are for international students. They are highly prestigious, and successful candidates will be considered to have outstanding research potential and will hold the equivalent of a UK first class honours degree as a minimum.

*Amount of funding available and eligibility: *

There are a limited number of applications available to the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Due ot funding restrictions applicants for a DHPA must be a national of one the countries listed on the Research Councils website. A Dorothy Hodgkin award cannot be held in conjunction with an Overseas Research Student Award Scheme (ORS). The award is not open to existing postgraduate students.

*How to apply:*

Applicants are required to complete an Overseas PG Research Studentship Application Form and provide two references - one external (ORS form 2) and one from the potential supervisor within the School (ORS form 3) the applicant will be attending. The references should demonstrate that the applicant is considered to have outstanding research potential.
