The Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation is an exciting new International program established at San Diego State University. Funded by a generous grant from the Fred J. Hansen Foundation, the inaugural Hansen Summer Institute took place in San Diego, California from July 2-22, 2007 and provided a unique University-based leadership experience and program in international cooperation. For three weeks, ten young American men and women joined 20 students from a variety of developing countries and regions of social strife.
A primary goal of the program focuses on creating an international community of young scholars who will use their summer experience as a foundation for creating lasting friendships and acquiring common practical understanding of a more peaceful future. Program elements will involve classroom instruction as well as training in the latest techniques of conflict resolution, simulations, and active role-play. The program will complement classroom training with local excursions to San Diego historical attractions and cultural events. Hansen Summer Institute training will aim to provide participants with hands-on tools for resolving conflict that can be applied and re-directed to their own situations at home.
