Information Management and Market Engineering - Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Germany

The University of Karlsruhe offers Doctoral Scholarships at the Graduate School (Graduiertenkolleg) "Information Management and Market Engineering" to applicants with an advanced degree in Business Administration, Economics, Engineering, Information Systems/Computer Science, Law or related disciplines. Financed by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft - DFG), the scholarships amount to € 1.468,- per month for three years; in addition, research and travel support will be provided. Depending on each student's academic background and research topic, scholars may be awarded the degree of Dr. rer. pol., Dr. rer. nat., Dr.-Ing. or Dr. iur. (the latter in cooperation with the law faculty of Universität Freiburg).

The Graduate School has a broad focus on electronic markets, and especially how such markets should be designed. Research in this area must incorporate considerations of the aforementioned disciplines, and is therefore invariably interdisciplinary. Current research topics include, but are not limited to, the economics of information and networks, game theory, behavioural economics, capital markets, peer-to-peer networks, web services, the semantic web, digital rights management, as well as environmental and energy markets. Alongside their PhD research, scholars attend some relevant courses and carry out joint research in the framework of an interdisciplinary seminar. The working language is English, and the thesis may be written in either English or German. Further information on the Graduate School and Universität Karlsruhe (TH) is available at http://www.ime.uni-karlsruhe.de.

Successful candidates will have an excellent academic record, be fluent in English, and show an interest in interdisciplinary work. Knowledge of another foreign language is an asset. The university is committed to increasing the share of women in research and especially encourages women to apply. Scholarships commence in February 2008; the date of entry may be deferred for a limited period.
