PhD Studentship: Computational intelligence - adaptive heuristic design - Faculty of Engineering, University of Iceland

The successful candidate will work on a challenging research project in the area hyperheuristics, using modern machine learning methods in learning search strategies for optimization, generalisation and robustness of evolved/learned strategies.

Building search methods for specific application areas so far require specialists to integrate their expertise in a given problem domain. Researchers from computer science, artificial intelligence and operational research fields have acknowledged the need for developing automated systems to minimize the role of the human expert in such situations. Adaptation and learning are two important components of complex problem-solving in nature. Here the main idea is automating the design of search methods by incorporating learning mechanisms into algorithms to adaptively guide the search. Both learning and adaptation processes can be realised on-line (i.e. during search) and/or off-line.

The applicants should possess an MSc degree in either operation research, computer science, applied mathematics or engineering with a solid background in computer programming. In addition, good verbal and writing skills in English are required.

The application should contain a cover letter, a full curriculum vitae including documentation of academic degrees and a minimum of two references. Applications should be sent as e-mail attachments in PDF format to Prof. Thomas Philip Runarsson, tpr@hi.is (Faculty of Engineering. University of Iceland, Dunhagi 5, IS-107 Reykjavik, Iceland).

The deadline for applications for fall semester, 2008 is April 15.

Appointments to the University of Iceland do take into account the Equal Rights Project of the University of Iceland.

Funding Notes
The fellowships will last for three years. Studies should commence in fall 2008. Each grant will start at ISK 2,300,000 per year (before taxes) to cover living expenses, no tuition fees but an annual registration fee of ISK 45,000 is required by the University of Iceland. The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to work with the Automated Scheduling, Optimisation and Planning Research Group at the University of Nottingham (http://www.asap.cs.nott.ac.uk).
