The School of Unity and Liberation (SOUL) offers a ten-week intensive introduction to community organizing and social change. The summer program is designed to for young activists, ages 18-25, who have been involved with social justice organizing for at least one year. SOUL is dedicated to helping young women, young people of color, young working class people, and queer youth step up to lead the movement. SOUL€ ¦’²s Summer School provides a structured time when participants can work full-time to develop their grassroots organizing skills and political analysis. The SOUL Summer School has three components:
Organizing Internships with local community organizations that work with low-income people and people of color to fight for their rights. These internships offer on-the-ground experience with the day-to-day work it takes to build community power.
Organizing Skills Training to help participants learn the concrete tools they will need to organize for power in communities. These trainings provide space to build the skills that will be used in the internships € ¦’¶ including outreach and recruitment skills, teamwork, action planning, and facilitation.
Political Education to think more deeply about the current political context of the world and how it relates to the conditions communities of color and working-class communities live in; including discussion on how the systems of oppression, capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and heterosexism have shaped the world and impacted people. The history of freedom movements around the world will also be studied in order to develop a strategic vision for building today€ ¦’²s movement.
The summer program begins on June 12th and with a graduation ceremony on August 16th. SOUL Summer School is a full-time commitment for the entire ten week program, therefore concurrent summer classes and jobs are not possible.
