PhD: Homogeneous Catalysis - Stratingh Institute for Chemistry, University of Groningen, The Netherlands

A PhD studentship is available in the group led by Dr Sijbren Otto
at the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry, University of Groningen, The Netherlands.
The studentship is part of a EU Marie Curie Research Training Network called REVCAT (http://www.revcat.eu).

The project will involve the development of new catalysts and new ways of controlling their activity using dynamic combinatorial chemistry, and will combine organic synthesis, analytical chemistry and functional studies. Further information can be found in Science 297, 590 (2002) and Angew.Chem.Int.Ed. 42, 1270 (2003). Details about the Otto group and the host institution can be found on http://www.rug.nl/scheikunde/onderzoek/scholen/stratingh/groepen/

About the city and the University: Groningen is a historic town and among the ten biggest cities in the Netherlands. It is a vibrant student town with a direct train connection to Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam. The University of Groningen (founded in 1614) has a long tradition of academic excellence, being one of the oldest research universities in Europe. Currently approximately 23,000 students are enrolled and every year about 250 PhD students defend their theses. It has a highly international character: English is the main language in the research laboratories.

The post is available from 1 September 2008. Applications should include a CV, a one-page statement of research interests, and contact details for two professional referees, and should be sent to Dr Sijbren Otto, Stratingh Institute, Nijenborgh 4, 9747 AG Groningen, The Netherlands (email: so230@cam.ac.uk).

Closing Date: 23 May 2008

Funding Notes
The successful candidate has a masters or equivalent degree in chemistry with a strong interest in catalysis. Good proficiency of the English language is required. Because of the eligibility rules for Marie Curie training networks, applicants must be non-Dutch nationals of an EU country or associated state, and must have less than four years research experience.
