PhD scholarship at the Univ. of Hull

Repairing Historical Wrongs: Reparations, Reconciliation and Intergenerational Injustice Applications are invited for a Ph.D. scholarship building upon the theme of ‘Repairing Historical Wrongs'. This theme is chiefly concerned with the legal and political challenges arising from the recent growth of high-profile campaigns to redress serious historical injustices, such as enslavement, genocide and wartime atrocities.

Of particular interest here are questions of intergenerational injustice. While events in the recent past involve immediate perpetrators and victims, the passage of time can often introduce further complications, with activists seeking restitution for injustices inflicted on their ancestors. These intergenerational issues can be
difficult to reconcile with established models of personal and legal responsibility, raising a series of ethical and practical questions that are yet to be fully explored.

This is a joint offering from the Law School and the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE). The successful applicant will be
supervised by Professor Gerry Johnstone, an expert on restorative justice, and Dr Joel Quirk, an expert on human rights. As this is an interdisciplinary project which can be developed in a variety of ways, the University encourages applications from candidates from many different backgrounds, including law, politics, history, sociology and philosophy.

Applicants should include with their application material:

1. A statement of 500 words (max) on:

• the skills and knowledge they can bring to this project;
• why they consider themselves to be the best person to undertake this research;

2. A paper of 1,000 words (max.) on how, if successful in their application, they envisage contributing to knowledge in the field of ‘Repairing Historical Wrongs'.

This is a full-time PhD Scholarship which includes fees at the ‘home/EU' student rate and maintenance (£12,940 in 2008/09) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress. Funding for conference attendance will also be available.
