BACKGROUND

Food is one of the most important thing in the country’s development. Good food will increase the quality of human life in the country automatically. Indonesia as a development country frequently facing the food problems, such as starvation and the lack of nutrition. Recently, the death caused by starvation and lack of nutrition especially for children is often informed in the news programs. Ironically, it happens mostly in the area which has a numerous natural sources. Unfortunately, the problems are caused by the low level of welfare, less of knowledge of nutrition in our society, and careless about healthy life style, not because of the incapability to provide food from Indonesia’s nature. Since Indonesia has a various kind of food that can fulfill the need of its citizen.

The government plays an important role to solve those problems. There are a lot of effort that have been done, such as provide inexpensive rice called raskin for the poor society and the nutrient education. However, the government still has not found the right solution yet. Support and cooperation from the entire field that related with citizen’s welfare are needed to fix this condition.

The 7th National Student’s Paper Competition (NSPC) brings the topic “better food for better life” that will be discussed into more specific sub theme, Emergency Foods, Halal Issues, Seafood as Potential Nutrition Source, Functional Indonesian’s Traditional Foods, and Food Diversification. With NSPC, we expect the government and the academic will give a more concern to a better food development. Increasing the awareness from all people about healthy food and healthy life is essential too. Thus can make a better solution for this country and make a better life to the society.

OBJECTIVES
o To improve English skill especially for the participants
o To improve student’s English proficiency
o To find the solutions of Indonesia’s food problem

ACTIVITY

The forms of activity of the 7th National Students Paper Competition are presentations from keynote speaker and presentation competition based on the papers that had been made by presenters.

Keynote speaker of this event is industrial practitioner from food industry who will present a presentation related to our theme. The judges will come from university lecturer, teacher from English course and industrial practitioner.

The competition consists of two rounds:

1. Qualification round. In this round, the judges will select abstract and full paper, which is received by the committee, so that they can enter the second round.

2. Final round. Students whose paper has been selected by the judges will be invited to Bogor Agricultural University to present their papers. In this final round, there will be only 12 teams maximal. From this round the judges will select for the best three teams: First winner, First Runner-Up and Second Runner-Up.

The winners will receive money prize in the total amount of six million rupiahs (Rp.6.000.000, 00) and souvenirs from sponsors.

The 1st Winner gets Rp. 3,000,000.00 and souvenirs

The 2nd Winner gets Rp. 2,000,000.00 and souvenirs

The 3rd Winner gets Rp. 1,000,000.00 and souvenirs

PLACE AND TIME

The competition and seminar will be held on Saturday, December 6th 2008 and will take place at the Abdul Muis Nasution (AMN) Hall, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Bogor Agricultural University, Darmaga-Bogor.

PARTICIPANT AND PRESENTERS

Participants of this event are divided into two categories: presenter and audience. Participants are diploma students, Undergraduates, and graduates from all universities Indonesia. Maximum presenter for the competition is 12 teams. Each team consists of maximum 3 persons. Maximum audience is 200 people.

TIME TABLE

October 1st 2008 - October 31st, 2008 : Publication and paper acceptance
November 10, 2008 : Deadline paper acceptance

November 11, 2008 - November 23, 2008 : Paper selection

November 24, 2008 : Announcement of presenters qualified for final round

December 3, 2008 : Deadline presentation acceptance
December 6, 2008 : D-Day
