CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
for the second generation of the interdisciplinary postgraduate study
"RELIGIOUS STUDIES"
The postgraduate programme in Religious Studies (MARS) is a two-year master programme based on the principles of comparison and interdisciplinarity, with the focus on the scholarly issues that cut across traditional religious communities and confessions. While taking into consideration the various interests and fields of specialization of the lecturers the curricula connects the numerous disciplinary approaches to the subject including the cultural, historical, sociological and theological approaches.
In accordance with the decision of the Senate of the University of Sarajevo the continuation of the MARS programme is confirmed and the Curricula which includes the following courses/scientific subjects are approved: Sociology of religion and methodology, Religions of the world, Ritual, symbol and myth, Religion and gender, Religion, violence and conflict resolution, Classic Islamic thought, Religion and nationalism in South East Europe, Religion and human rights, Contemporary religious theories, Christology since Enlightenment, Religion and education (elective course), Religion and social justice (elective course), Comparative religious law (elective
course), Western religious traditions (elective course).
Bologna standards are applied in the Programme: mobility, ECTS (ECTS 120 in total), partnership among universities (participation of foreign lecturers in the realization of modules as module leaders, work on the development of teaching curriculum) and in addition, European dimension of higher education.
Admission requirements:
Taking into consideration the interdisciplinary curricula the programme aims to attract applicants with various backgrounds and different institutions including teachers, NGO activists, members of the institutions of the religious communities, media experts as well as holders of BA degrees in humanities and social sciences.
The applicants must hold a university degree relevant to an academic study of religion. For the diplomas earned outside Bosnia and Herzegovina it is required to start the diploma recognition procedure as soon as the registration for the first semester is open. Excellent knowledge of the English language is also required. If a sufficient number of applicants whose native languages are not spoken on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina decide to apply translation into English will be provided for the lectures in the B/H/S languages.
Selection criteria are as follows: outstanding academic quality, relevant professional experience, strong motivation, excellent English language skills and interpersonal communication skills.
The programme is designed for a minimum of 20 and maximum 30 students who will be selected based on the completed application package which includes:
University diploma (for foreign diplomas the recognition process must be commenced when registering for the first semester), official academic transcripts, proof of English language proficiency, Curriculum Vitae) and a short essay in English on the reasons for applying to this Programme. Interviews are also planned.
Planned start of the programme: October 2009. The lectures will take place during weekends and/or in late afternoon hours during weekdays in the premises of the Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies of the University of Sarajevo.
Diploma: Master degree diploma of the University of Sarajevo.
Degree: scientific degree of Master of social sciences in the field of religious studies.
Tuition fee: the students' financial input into the implementation of the two-year programme is BAM 6.500,00 (including the expenses for the thesis defense), with the possibility in paying it in 4 installments (first installment BAM 2.000,00).
CIPS will provide partial scholarships for students who are coming oustide Sarajevo and BiH.
The application packages must be delivered to the Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies of the University of Sarajevo, Zmaja od Bosne 8 (University Campus).
