The curatorial team of The 2nd Roma Pavilion - Call the Witness announces its open call for artists, researchers and media archive.
This project, which will be presented in Venice in 2011, is conceptualised and curated by the interdisciplinary collaborative curatorial team: Suzana Milevska, Vladan Jeremic, Rena Raedle and Enisa Eminovska.
The 2nd Roma Pavilion - Call the Witness is an interdisciplinary collaboration that aims at fostering, producing and presenting contemporary and new media art by Roma artists from different regions and cultures. At the core of the project lies the concept of the contemporary artist as an instantaneous witness of his/her time who is
not a passive viewer but rather acts as an active participant in solidarity with the events and people that provoked his/her art work. Such a phenomenon, wherein art becomes a potential agent of social makeover, acquires a completely new prospect in this period of digitalisation and globalisation, and may greatly affect Roma
communities.
We issue a "Call for Witnesses" to bring to light testimonies and statements from artists and researchers that will adress of the different situations of Roma communities throughout the world. The question: who has control over the means of representation and has the power to promote the dominant cultural and moral values concerning Roma communities provoked us to put emphasis on new media art as an
available means for self-presentation and self-reflection.
We invite artists and researchers to submit proposals that address these issues in a way that will allow further collaborative development, both of content and media-wise. The selected contributors will be invited to present and discuss their proposals at a working meeting to take place in Belgrade (April 2010) where we will discuss the possibilities of eventual further productions of individual works
or collaborative projects. The conditions for production will be agreed for the most promising concepts to be realised in 2010 and presented at the 2nd Roma Pavilion in Venice (2011).
The project 2nd Roma Pavilion - Call the Witness is organised by the Roma Media Base - A Skopje based organisation for archiving, producing and presenting contemporary and new media art by Roma artists and communities, and the Biro for Culture and Communication from Belgrade. The project is supported by the Open Society Institute and other organisations and sponsors.
The First Roma Pavilion took place in 2007 as a collateral exhibition at the 52nd Venice Biennale and was initiated by the Open Society Institute.
HOW TO APPLY?
1. Call for artists/researchers
Deadline: 15 March 2010
The applications should consist of:
- comprehensive narrative CV (up to 500 words),
- motivational letter and draft (up to 500 words) that will draw on your interests and the main issues addressed in this project
-your e-mail/phone contacts
Optional:
-visual materials (screenshots, links to videos, pdfs, links to websites, etc) from existing works or works in progress and proposals for new research, photographs, video, animation, performance, comic strips, sound art and other new media projects.
Who can apply: all Roma artists and other emerging Roma professionals (art researchers, theorists, curators, activists, etc.), working individually or in groups in the fields of contemporary art and culture from any country and region.
2. Call the Witness Media Archive
Deadline: 1 May 2010
We invite Roma cultural centers, archives, festivals and other organisations and producers to submit existing new media productions (photo archives, video research projects, etc.) to the Call the Witness Media Archive that will be presented at the 2nd Roma Pavilion in Venice.
At this stage please submit only a description of the media production(s) or the content of your archive, the address of your organisation and samples (texts, images jpgs, links to video excerpts, existing online archives, etc.)

Das kuratorische Team des 2nd Roma Pavilion - Call the Witness
lädt hiermit Künstler/innen, Wissenschafter/ innen und Medienarchive ein, Vorschläge einzureichen.
Der 2. Roma Pavillon mit dem Titel "Aufruf der Zeugen" wird 2011 in Venedig vorgestellt und wird kuratiert und konzipiert von dem interdisziplinä ren Kuratorenkollektiv Suzana Milevska, Vladan Jeremiæ, Rena Rädle und Enisa Eminovska.
2nd Roma Pavilion - Call the Witness ist ein interdisziplinä res Projekt, das zeitgenössische Kunst und Medienkunst von Roma-Künstler/ innen aus verschiedenen Regionen und Kulturen befördern, produzieren und präsentieren möchte. Unser Ausgangspunkt ist, dass wir die Kunstschaffenden als unmittelbare Zeuginnen und Zeugen des Zeitgeschehens verstehen, die nicht passiv beobachten, sondern aktiv
eingreifen und in Solidarität mit den Geschehnissen und Menschen handeln, auf die sie in ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit Bezug nehmen. Ein Kunstschaffen im Sinne von sozialer Veränderung gewinnt eine neue Dimension in Zeiten der Digitalisierung und Globalisierung und kann damit für die Roma von großer Bedeutung sein.
Wir rufen Künstler/innen und Wissenschafter/ innen als Zeugen an, um Aussagen und Meinungen zu hören zur Situation der Roma in der ganzen Welt. Die Frage danach, wer die Repräsentationsmitte l kontrolliert und damit die Hoheit über die Vermittlung kultureller und moralischer Werte im Bezug auf die Roma innehat brachte uns dazu, die Medienkunst als Mittel der Selbstrepräsentation und Selbstreflektion in den
Mittelpunkt unseres kuratorischen Konzepts zu stellen.
Wir rufen Künstler/innen und Wissenschaftler/ innen auf, mit ihren Projektskizzen auf den genannten Themenbereich in einer Weise Bezug zu nehmen die es erlaubt, das vorgeschlagene Konzept kollaborativ weiterzuentwickeln, sowohl inhaltlich als auch medial. Die Autor/innen der ausgewählten Beiträge werden auf einem Arbeitstreffen in Belgrad im April 2010 ihre Konzepte vorstellen und wir werden gemeinsam diskutieren wie kollaborative Projekte oder individuelle Arbeiten weiterentwickelt und produziert werden können. Die besten Konzepte werden ausgewählt und im Laufe des Jahres 2010 produziert um 2011 im 2. Roma Pavillon in Venedig vorgestellt zu werden.
Der 2. Roma Pavillon wird produziert von Biro za kulturu i komunikaciju Belgrad und Roma Media Base Skopje und wird vom Open Society Institute und anderen Sponsoren unterstützt.
Der erste Roma Pavillon fand 2007 im Rahmenprogramm der 52. Venedig Biennale statt und wurde vom Open Society Institute initiiert.

Wir rufen Roma Kulturzentren, Archive, Festivals und andere Organisationen und Produzenten auf, existierende Produktionen in neuen Medien für das Call the Witness-Medienarchi v einzureichen, das im 2.Roma Pavillon in Venedig vorgestellt wird.
Wir bitten sie vorerst lediglich eine Beschreibung der Medienproduktion( en) oder des Inhalts Ihres Archivs einzusenden (Texte, jpg-Bilder, links zu videos oder bestehden Online-Archiven) , nebst der Kontaktdaten Ihrer Organisation.

Kuratorski tim Drugog romskog paviljona - Call the Witness objavljuje otvoreni poziv za umetnike/ce, istra¾ivaèe/ice i medijske arhive.
Ovaj projekat, koji æe biti predstavljen u Veneciji 2011, konceptualizovan je i organizovan zahvaljujuæi saradnji interdisciplinarnog kuratorskog tima koji èine: Suzana Milevska, Vladan Jeremiæ, Rena Redle i Enisa Eminovska.
Drugi romski paviljon - Call the Witness predstavlja interdisciplinarnu saradnju èiji je cilj podsticanje, produciranje i predstavljanje savremene umetnosti i umetnosti novih medija romskih umetnika i umetnica iz razlièitih regiona i kultura. U sr¾i projekta le¾i koncept savremenog umetnika i savremene umetnice kao neposrednog
svedoka svog vremena, koji nije pasivni posmatraè, veæ pre deluje kao aktivni uèesnik u solidarnosti s dogaðajima i ljudima koji su podstakli njegov rad. Takva jedna pojava, gde umetnost postaje potencijalni pokretaè dru¹tvenih promena, poprima potpuno novu perspektivu u ovom razdoblju digitalizacije i globalizacije, i mo¾e
umnogome uticati na romske zajednice.
Objavljujemo "Poziv za svedoke" kako bismo na videlo izneli svedoèanstva i izjave umetnika/ca i istra¾ivaèa/ica koje æe podiæi svest o razlièitim prilikama romskih zajednica ¹irom sveta. Pitanje "ko upravlja sredstvima predstavljanja i ima moæ da promovi¹e dominantne kulturne i moralne vrednosti u vezi s romskim zajednicama? "
navelo nas je da naglasak stavimo na umetnost novih medija kao raspolo¾ivo sredstvo za predstavljanje sebe i samoispitivanje.
Pozivamo umetnike i umetnice, istra¾ivaèe i istra¾ivaèice da podnesu predloge koji se bave ovim pitanjima na naèin koji æe omoguæiti dalji zajednièki razvoj, kako sadr¾aja tako i u pogledu medija. Odabrani prilagaèi/ce biæe pozvani da predstave svoje predloge i raspravljaju o njima na radnom sastanku koji æe se odr¾ati u Beogradu (u aprilu 2010), gde æemo razgovarati o moguænostima eventualnih daljih produkcija pojedinaènih radova ili zajednièkih projekata. Uslovi za produkciju biæe utanaèeni za najizglednije koncepte, koji æe biti realizovani u 2010. i predstavljeni na Drugom romskom paviljonu u Veneciji (2011).
Organizatori projekta 2nd Roma Pavilion - Call the Witness jesu Roma Media Base - organizacija sa sedi¹tem u Skoplju koja se bave arhiviranjem, produciranjem i predstavljanjem savremene umetnosti i umetnosti novih medija romskih umetnika i zajednica, i Biro za kulturu i komunikaciju iz Beograda. Projekat podr¾avaju Institut za otvoreno dru¹tvo i druge organizacije i pokrovitelji.
Prvi romski paviljon odr¾ao se 2007. kao prateæa izlo¾ba na 52. Bijenalu u Veneciji i inicirao ga je Institut za otvoreno dru¹tvo.
KAKO SE PRIJAVITI?
1. Poziv za umetnike/ce i istra¾ivaèe/ice

Prijave treba da sadr¾e:
- iscrpan narativni CV (do 500 reèi),
- motivaciono pismo i skicu (do 500 reèi) koji æe izneti va¹a interesovanja i glavna pitanja kojima se projekat bavi,
- va¹ kontakt mejl/telefon
Po ¾elji:
- vizuelne materijale (kadrove iz videa, linkove za video-radove, pdf-ove, linkove za veb-sajtove itd) iz postojeæih radova ili radova u razvoju i predloge za nova istra¾ivanja, fotografije, video-radove, animacije, performanse, stripove, zvuène umetnièke radove i druge projekte novih medija.
Ko mo¾e da se prijavi: svi romski umetnici i umetnice i ostali romski profesionalci/ ke (istra¾ivaèi/ce umetnosti, teoretièari/ke, kuratori/ke, aktivisti/kinje, itd), koji/e rade samostalno ili u grupama u polju savremene umetnosti i kulture, iz svih zemalja i regiona.
2. Poziv za medijske arhive

Pozivamo romske kulturne centre, arhive, festivale i ostale organizacije i producente da podnesu postojeæe produkcije novih medija (foto arhive, istra¾ivaèke video-projekte, itd) medijskoj arhivi Call the Witness koja æe biti predstavljena na Drugom romskom paviljonu u Veneciji.
