CfP: Gypsy Groups in the Orient and around Its Fringes, Leipzig-AT

The forum on Romani/Gypsy studies (FTF) invites all (junior) researchers and interested people, who have to do with Gypsy cultures, to some networking in Leipzig, April 23-25, 2010.

Interdisciplinary exchange and networking between researchers, who deal with gypsy cultures on a regional or a topic-oriented basis, are central to the meeting.

In this respect, the main interest lies in lectures related to ethnology, regional sciences, history, linguistics and sociology.

We would like to especially encourage those students or graduates to contribute to the meeting, whose final papers were or will be linked to the field of Romani/Gypsy studies.

The main focus of this year's workshop is on the following topics:

a) South America
b) Gypsy groups in the Orient and around its fringes
c) Political Romani/Gypsy studies
d) Sinti, Yeniche and other groups in Europe beyond the Romani discourse
e) Historical and ethno-historical Romani/Gypsy studies

All other topics, which are proposed during the preparation of the workshop by people interested in taking part in the workshop, will form separate subject areas. The language of the workshop is German. However, lectures can also be held in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Persian or Romani.

After the events and the common dinners, the days are rounded off in a relaxed atmosphere with the latest musical or cinematic contributions.

The participation fee is about 10 euros (without liability). Travel expenses will not be compensated. In special cases of hardship, people with financial difficulties can be supported by the University of Leipzig or the student council.

For the duration of the workshop, it is possible for participants to stay with other participants living in Leipzig.

Participants who would like to give a short presentation on their work or give a theoretical and methodical, a practice oriented or any other lecture, are asked to hand in a summary of not more than one page by March 28th, 2010.

All other participants can register for the workshop and name their field of interest until April 14th, 2010.

Registrations for the workshop and questions are to be sent to:
